Patrick Mahomes Reveals Surprise Turning Point in Super Bowl LIX Loss to Eagles

The Philadelphia Eagles closed the book on the 2024 NFL season with a dominant 40-22 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX. They managed to win the game by pressuring Chiefs star quarterback Patrick Mahomes all game long, and it resulted in him making several big mistakes that helped the Eagles coast to victory.

While Mahomes threw for 257 yards and three touchdowns, he also tossed a pair of interceptions and lost a fumble along the way, with one of the picks getting returned for a touchdown by Cooper DeJean. However, when looking back on the game, Mahomes believes that one of his other turnovers ended up being more costly than DeJean’s pick-six.

Patrick Mahomes Opens Up on Super Bowl Loss vs. Eagles

From start to finish, the Eagles manhandled the Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX. Even with their high-powered rushing attack not firing on all cylinders, it didn’t really matter because everything else was working. Jalen Hurts was carving up Kansas City’s secondary, and the defense was making Mahomes run for his life every time he dropped back under center.

The Chiefs managed to keep things somewhat competitive early in the game, but things took a turn in the second quarter when Mahomes threw a pair of interceptions to DeJean and star linebacker Zack Baun. Considering how DeJean returned his interception for a touchdown, it is widely viewed as the turning point in the game.

Mahomes doesn’t view it that way, though. DeJean’s interception made the game 17-0 in Philadelphia’s favor, but there was still time for K.C. to work some magic. It was Baun’s interception, though, that sapped the Chiefs of any sort of momentum they had, which is why Mahomes believes it was the more costly of the two picks.

“You wanna get something good to happen going into the half,” Mahomes said in the final episode of ESPN’s “The Kingdom” documentary series. “That one, it hurt the momentum of the game. That’s why I think that interception hurt so much, even more than I think the pick-six hurt.”

Philadelphia played its best football on the biggest stages last season, and it will be looking to carry that momentum into the 2025 season. With their star-studded core still largely intact, they are going to remain an incredibly tough team to beat if they can find their form from their playoff run last season.

Mahomes and the Chiefs are going to be looking for revenge, but if the Eagles are playing up to their potential, it simply may not matter. The regular season hasn’t even begun yet, but Philadelphia is the title favorite until someone knocks them off their perch. If they can dominate Kansas City in the sort of humiliating fashion they did last season, who’s to say they can’t run it back and repeat as champions?
