Browns QB Tyler Huntley Gets Honest on ‘Practice’ After Beating Eagles

Tyler Huntley is the forgotten man in the Cleveland Browns quarterback room but the former Pro Bowler seems to be having a good time.

Huntley arrived in Cleveland on August 5 for his second stint with the Browns. Cleveland brought in Huntley with multiple quarterbacks dealing with injuries. He’s not expected to factor into what the Browns have dubbed an open quarterback competition, which primarily features Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett, Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders. And it’s unlikely he’ll make the final 53-man roster.

However, Huntley has been able to get a healthy serving of preseason reps, putting some play on tape for other teams to take a look at. Huntley was 6-of-8 for 51 yards and a touchdown against the Carolina Panthers.

He followed that up on Saturday with 71 yards on 10-of-13 passing, being efficient in a half of play. The Browns beat the Philadelphia Eagles 22-13.

After the game, Huntley put up an Instagram post, alluding to the fact that he’s had very little practice and reps with the Browns.

“Practice??? I Hop Off The (plane) N Do My Thang Evrytime,” Huntley wrote, along with pictures from the matchup with the Eagles.

Dillon Gabriel Has Mixed Browns Debut

The main quarterback in the spotlight on Saturday was Gabriel, who was making his preseason debut. The Browns selected Gabriel in the third round and there was a lot of anticipation about what he would look like in live game action.

For the most part, Gabriel was effective and accurate, completing 13-of-18 passes for 149 yards. However, he also tossed a rough interception returned for a touchdown in the second quarter.

“Obviously that can never happen on that play,” Stefanski said of the pick-six. “Not all interceptions are created equal, but we can’t do that as a football team.”

Like his review of Sanders a week ago, Stefanski noted that Gabriel and the offense as a whole have some things to work on.

“Plenty to clean up. There are some things I thought he did well,” Stefanski said. “I thought our offense as a whole on third down was very good early, which allowed us to stay on the field because I don’t think we were great on first and second down. But, plenty to clean up.”

Browns Hoping for Healthy ‘Dress Rehearsal’

The 40-year-old Flacco has been the only quarterback who has remained healthy for the entirety of training camp and the preseason. The Browns have not used Flacco in their first two preseason games, opting to rest the former Super Bowl MVP.

Pickett and Gabriel have both dealt with hamstring injuries. Pickett’s has proven to be more severe, limiting him since late July. Gabriel returned to full action this week.

Sanders was knocked out of practice this week with an oblique injury, which also sidelined him against the Eagles.

The Browns are hoping that all of their quarterbacks will be healthy enough to play in the preseason final next week against the Los Angeles Rams.

“We will treat the final preseason game in a dress rehearsal type way in the sense that we’re gonna do a regular season schedule this week,” Stefanski said. “I want the guys to get used to getting a game plan, new plays, kind of evolving the offense, the defense, the special teams, so to speak. And then in terms of who plays and that type of thing, we’ll talk about that later.”
