Child dies after incident in river at popular hiking spot

A child has died in Wacker Quay, a popular beauty spot in Cornwall.

The unnamed child got into trouble in the waters of the River Lynher near Torpoint at around 6pm yesterday.

Paramedics trudged through the muddy terrain into the night to save the youngster, setting up floodlights along the shoreline.

But the child was declared dead at the scene, the police confirmed to Metro today.

The force added: ‘The death is not being treated as suspicious, and a file will be prepared for the coroner.’

Photographs during the rescue operation, published in Plymouth Plus, show officers carrying evidence bags containing burgers and buns.

The search, which included teams from the Coast Guard and fire brigade, was one of the largest in the area in recent years, the outlet said.

Wacker, about two miles west of Antony village, is a remote hiking route, woodland trail and fishing spot within the Tamar Valley.

The HM Coastguard was unable to comment. The ambulance service has been approached for comment.
