Commanders Reportedly Shopping Brian Robinson Jr. in Trade Talks

While the Washington Commanders would love to figure out their contract stalemate with star wide receiver Terry McLaurin, they have a plethora of talent elsewhere on their roster. In fact, in the opinion of their front office, they may have too much talent, which could lead them to make a surprising trade before the start of the season.

The Commanders could certainly use McLaurin at wide receiver, but their running back room is stocked full of options the team feels comfortable turning to in a pinch. As a result, reports have emerged indicating Washington’s starter at this position, Brian Robinson Jr., could end up getting traded in the near future.

Commanders Exploring Potential Brian Robinson Jr. Trade

The Commanders selected Robinson in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft, but his career immediately got sidetracked after he was shot in the knee and glute during an armed robbery right before the start of his rookie season. Robinson eventually ended up making his NFL debut in Week 5, but he struggled to the tune of only 3.9 yards per carry in his 12 games played.

With a full offseason of work, Robinson returned to the team and established himself as the team’s top running back for the past two seasons. In 2024, Robinson racked up 799 yards and eight touchdowns on 187 carries, while also catching 20 passes for 159 yards. He has continually gotten better with each passing season, and he appeared to be set to reprise his role in 2025.

However, fans were dealt a surprise on Sunday night when it was revealed that Robinson, who is entering the final year of his rookie contract, is being shopped in trade talks by Washington’s front office. While the Commanders aren’t in a rush to ship him out of town, if the right offer comes across their table, they could be inclined to pull the trigger on a deal.

“Sources: The Commanders have been shopping RB Brian Robinson Jr. to teams around the NFL,” Jordan Schultz of Fox Sports reported. “The former 3rd-round pick out of Alabama is entering the final year of his contract.”

“(Robinson) has been highly productive through his first three seasons — rushing for 2,300+ yards and scoring 20 TDs, all while coming back from being shot before his rookie year. Washington likes its RB depth, but Robinson is available for the right price.”

Should the Commanders Trade Brian Robinson Jr.?

Behind Robinson, the Commanders have Austin Ekeler, Jeremy McNichols, and Chris Rodriguez Jr. at running back, and all three of those guys were involved in the team’s offense last year. Add in star quarterback Jayden Daniels’ rushing abilities, and it’s fair to wonder if Washington could get by without Robinson leading its ground game.

For now, a trade doesn’t exactly appear imminent, but Robinson’s time with Washington could quickly be coming to an end. His status will certainly be watching over the next couple of weeks, especially with roster cuts on the horizon, because if the Commanders get a deal they like for Robinson, it seems like he could be on the move.
