Lions Get Concerning News as Detroit Season Approaches

The Detroit Lions are in the midst of the preseason, which has been a mixed bag when it comes to testing the team’s rookies and backup players. The preseason is always a great time to see players in action that will serve as backups to the starters, and it can also be a good way to test the depth of a team.

For the Detroit Lions, one thing the team really hopes to do is stay healthy for the 2025-26 season. Last season, a bevy of Detroit Lions players were injured during the regular season, many of them on the defensive side, and it led to trouble in the postseason. It’s possible that if the team had been healthy by January, they would have advanced in the postseason, and that’s the goal for this year. The Motor City is strong, and the Lions are resilient and can come back.

But, the Lions have already been dealt with a rash of injuries this summer, before the regular season has even started. Now, one more promising rookie is likely going to be out “for a minute,” according to head coach Dan Campbell.

Another Detroit Lions Player Out

On Saturday, August 16, the Detroit Lions went up against the Miami Dolphins in a preseason game and lost. But, that wasn’t the bad part. Sadly, during the game, a beloved rookie had to exit the game and head to the locker room after suffering an injury.

Nolan Bianchi of The Detroit News reported that rookie sixth-round pick Ahmed Hassanein didn’t even stop by the medical tent on the sidelines after experiencing what appears to be an elbow injury. Instead of checking in at the medial tent, he just went right into the locker room for what was likely an examination by the Detroit Lions medical staff. Hassanein not even going to the medical tent shows the he know his injury was something more serious than a check-in and then going back on the field.

Hassanein didn’t return to the game on Saturday. This isn’t the first time he’s had an injury, too. During a practice session before to the team’s preseason game against the Miami Dolphins, he suffered an injury that looked like a serious serious leg injury, but it wasn’t as serious as expected.

Now, the Lions will wait and see what the medical professionals say about Hassanein. Before Saturday’s game, Hassanein had clocked three tackles in the Lions’ first two preseason games. He’s a promising player, if he can stay healthy enough to get on the field.

Detroit Lions Head Coach Gives Update on Player

After the preseason game, Campbell was asked about the status of Hassanein’s injury. He was honest and said that the player could be out for a bit.

“He is, out of a the (injuries) we had today, he might be the one that could be a minute. It could be a little bit,” Campbell said. “We’ll know more in the morning. For everybody else, I think we got out okay.”

Then, on Monday, August 18, Campbell told reporters what nobody wanted to hear. “(Hassanein is) gonna be down for a while,” Campbell said. “He’s got a pec.”

To make matters worse, Campbell wouldn’t say the rookie was even coming back this season. “Dan Campbell says he’s not sure if (Hassanein) will return at some point this season or not,” ESPN’s Eric Woodyard reported.

Hassanein was the Detroit Lions’ sixth-round pick in this year’s NFL draft. He’s a developmental player who doesn’t have a lot of experience, but he had a solid training camp showing, so the expectations are rising for him.

Hassanein joins Alim McNeill, Josh Paschal, Mekhi Wingo and Pat O’Connor as injured Detroit Lions players during the offseason. Let’s hope they all get back to normal sooner rather than later.
