Ravens Linked to All-Pro CB Attempting NFL Comeback After 3 Years

It seems there might be an unknown injury in the Ravens‘ secondary. According to Kevin Oestreicher citing “multiple reports,” Baltimore brought free agent cornerback Kyle Fuller in for a workout on Sunday. It would be a homecoming for Fuller, who grew up in Baltimore and played for the Ravens previously.

Fuller hasn’t played in the NFL since 2022, when he was with the Ravens. He tore his ACL in the first game of the season and hasn’t signed with a team since, though he did work out with the Commanders back in October. Baltimore’s starters are set, but perhaps he can settle into a backup role, if he’s signed.

Kyle Fuller Was Once One of the Best Cornerbacks in the League

At his best, Fuller was an elite force in the secondary. He was a first-round pick by the Bears out of Virginia Tech back in 2014, and made his mark immediately as a rookie — 64 tackles, four interceptions, 10 passes defensed, and three forced fumbles is quite the first impression. He made two Pro Bowls during his six seasons with the Bears, including the 2018 season in which he recorded 55 tackles, seven interceptions, and a staggering 21 passes defensed, earning his first-team All-Pro honors.

After being released by Chicago after the 2020 season, he signed a one-year deal with the Broncos in 2021, then did the same with the Ravens in 2022. After rehabbing from his ACL injury, he was unable to land a spot in a training camp prior to the 2023 season. Though he hasn’t signed with a team, he’s conducted multiple visits and workouts over the last two years, indicating he’s still interested in a return to the league despite being 33 years old.

Ravens’ Secondary is Already Loaded

At cornerback, the Ravens are trotting out Marlon Humphrey, Nate Wiggins, and Jaire Alexander as the starters, with Chidobe Awuzie, T.J. Tampa, and Jalyn Armour-Davis as the primary backups. Even depth pieces like Marquise Robinson and Reuben Lowry have flashed in the past. It’s unlikely they’ll all be able to make the roster, as carrying eight corners on the active roster would be extremely abnormal for an NFL team.

It’s unclear if the Ravens are looking to add a depth corner in general or if their interest was in Fuller specifically. If it’s the former, there’s a high probability that the team suffered an injury at cornerback that hasn’t been revealed to the public yet. Or, perhaps they wanted to work out Fuller to see if he’d be an upgrade over guys currently on the roster.

There’s also the possibility that they were looking for Fuller to play safety. Early in his Bears career, there was speculation that he might move to safety, but that dissipated as he developed into a lockdown corner. The Raven’s safety depth took a hit recently with the loss of Ar’Darius Washington, so perhaps that’s why they looked at Fuller.
