Quentin Grimes is yet to reach an agreement over a new contract with the Philadelphia 76ers. Grimes is a restricted free agent this summer and will likely be seeking a pay rise from the Sixers.
In a recent article for Bleacher Report, Dan Favale predicted the Sixers and Grimes will ultimately land on a deal worth $67 million over four years, with a player option on the final year.
“The absence of a deal—and concretely reported price point—suggests the two sides are far apart,” Favale wrote. “That could pave the way for a ‘signs-the-qualifying-offer’ situation…This dance between player and team is giving off an air of inevitability. Grimes and the Sixers will reach a multi-year agreement, with some team flexibility, that guarantees him a notch above mid-level-exception money. Prediction: Quentin Grimes re-signs with the Sixers on a four-year, $67 million deal, with a team option in the final season.”
Grimes, who enjoyed a breakout season for the Sixers, isn’t going to have the same wide-ranging role that he enjoyed last season. Philadelphia’s guard rotation is both talented and healthy. As such, any notion of betting on himself to reproduce the performances we saw last season is likely unrealistic for the 25-year-old.
Grimes Still Expected to Re-Sign With Sixers
According to Jake Fischer, who was speaking via an August 8 Bleacher Report livestream, Grimes is still expected to re-sign with Philadelphia. However, there doesn’t appear to be a rush to get a deal over the line.
“I can absolutely say that the Sixers—various people in the organization, when asked—keep saying that Quentin Grimes is their top priority,” Fischer said. “And that they are going to bring Quentin Grimes back, it’s just a matter of dollars and cents. There is some buzz of him taking the qualifying offer, too.”
Fischer continued.
“I do think, at the end of the day, as things get to September and maybe even closer to October, that there will be enough synergy [to get a deal done] between Quentin Grimes and the Sixers… Quentin Grimes has never made significant money throughout his tenure as an NBA player. He absolutely stands to benefit from taking a significant offer, whatever it ends up being, from Philadelphia.”
Sixers Urged Not to Overpay Grimes
According to an anonymous NBA executive, who spoke with Fred Katz of The Athletic, the Sixers should approach their negotiations with caution.
“The way the cap (environment) is now, why would you spend $20 million on Quentin Grimes when you can get (Bucks guard) Gary Trent (Jr.) for a minimum?” The executive said. “We shouldn’t just sign young players because they’re young. … You’ve got to believe Grimes is gonna develop into your starting backcourt with (Tyrese) Maxey.”
Grimes will undoubtedly have a role to play within Nick Nurse’s rotation. However, paying him based on what he achieved last season would be foolish. The Sixers will likely use Grimes as a role player moving forward, and thus, he will not be as impactful as he was upon joining the franchise midway through an injury-hit 2024-25 season.
