Armed police officer injured after stand off with man ‘wielding sword and a knife’

An armed police officer was left with a slashed hand after a confrontation with a man allegedly seen ‘wielding a sword and a knife’.

The officer suffered a cut to his hand during the stand off, which saw someone tasered.

It followed reports of a man ‘with two bladed weapons’ at around 7.45am in Worcester Close, Istead Rise in Gravesend, Kent.

Armed police were dispatched to the scene where they spoke to a man allegedly acting in a threatening manner.

A police officer then discharged a fire at the suspect, who was reportedly seen ‘wielding a sword and a knife’ earlier, according to KentOnline.

Gary Hickinson told the news site he saw arrived at the scene of the confrontation while taking his daughter to nursery.

He said: ‘When I got there the police had him in handcuffs already.

‘I spoke to one of the officers who said that because an officer was injured the road would be closed for some time.’

The suspect has been described as a British national.

A police spokesman said: ‘A 29-year-old local man was arrested on suspicion of assault and possession of an offensive weapon.

‘He was taken into custody and an investigation is underway.’

The injured officer was taken to hospital for medical attention.
