The New York Giants have significantly improved the talent at the top of the roster at several key positions over the past two years, largely through the NFL Draft, and a former first-round choice could be an ideal trade chip to keep the momentum going for Joe Schoen, or whoever is the general manager in 2026.
After selecting Abdul Carter with the No. 3 overall pick in this spring’s NFL Draft, and the former Penn State standout flashing the traits to be a game-wrecker as a rookie, Kayvon Thibodeaux could be the most valuable trade chip Schoen has at his disposal ahead of the 2025 season.
Heavy Sports’ Max Dible suggests that the Chicago Bears could be an ideal destination, and could fetch a future third-round draft choice and fourth-round draft choice in a trade.
“Chicago needs a pure pass rusher,” Dible points out. “And while Thibodeaux isn’t perfect, he’s more than good enough to start for the Bears. The Giants, menawhile, have Abdul Carter and Brian Burns on the edge, which means Thibodeaux is expendable for the right price.
“The Giants will probably want more than a third and a fourth, but two third-rounders is a big tab for Chicago given they may struggle in 2025 and finish near the top 10 in the draft order for the third straight season.”
Through his first three seasons, Thibodeaux has produced 21 sacks, with the 25-year-old setting a career-high with 11.5 back in 2023.
The Giants declining to exercise Thibodeaux’s fifth-year option could telegraph how the organization feels about the former Oregon star and their future plans at the position.
Thibodeaux, 6-foot-5 and 256 pounds, has the athleticism to be an impact defender and could benefit from a change of scenery where he would likely start opposite Montez Sweat in the Bears’ front-seven, rather than fighting for snaps as a rotational rusher alongside Carter and Brian Burns in North Jersey.
Kayvon Thibodeaux ‘Flipped a Switch’ Giants Teammate Says

Ishika Samant | GettyGiants edge rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux has sights set on a breakout 2025 season.
Whether Thibodeaux is in a Giants uniform, or elsewhere in 2025, the former No. 5 overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft could be on the cusp of a breakout season.
Giants veteran edge rusher Brian Burns recently told reporters that he believes Thibodeaux “flipped a switch” down the stretch in 2024, and could be poised for an even more disruptive 2025 season ahead.
According to Burns, Thibodeaux spent the second half of last season, “playing a lot harder and more physical.”
With the 2025 season approaching, Thibodeaux has set his sights on a historic season, one that would certainly silence his detractors and set him up for a significant pay day ahead of becoming eligible for free agency for the first time next spring.
“I always have personal goals,” Thibodeaux recently told reporters. “I think I start off with just trying to be the best and trying to break the record. I’m always going for the league record or (former Giants defensive end Michael) Strahan’s record when it comes to sacks and tackles and things like that. For me, you know, I also just want to play my best ball, whatever that looks like, so not only the numbers, but having the film to match it.”
