Bears HC Buys $3.25 Million Mansion After Listing Michigan Home

The Chicago Bears have cycled through head coaches over the past decade, as they have had five different guys leading their team on the sideline over the past 11 years. After firing Matt Eberflus and relieving Thomas Brown of his interim head coaching duties last year, the Bears opted to hire former Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson to come in and be their new head coach.

Johnson is largely responsible for turning the Lions into an offensive superpower over the past few seasons, and he will be tasked with helping elevate Caleb Williams and company to another level in 2025 and beyond. After getting hired by Chicago, Johnson quickly made a big purchase that shows his commitment to his new team.

Ben Johnson Buys Massive Mansion in Chicago

Johnson has been working as a football coach since 2009, when he broke in as a graduate assistant with the Boston College Eagles. In 2012, Johnson latched on with the Miami Dolphins as an offensive assistant, and he gradually worked his way up the ranks before departing for the Lions in the 2019 season.

Similar to his time with Miami, Johnson worked his way up the ladder, starting as an offensive quality control coach before eventually becoming the team’s offensive coordinator in 2022. Since then, Detroit’s offense has been very nearly unstoppable, leading to him becoming one of the hottest head coaching candidates in the league.

After turning down several head coaching gigs last offseason, Johnson finally made the jump this year to join the Bears. And in doing so, he quickly bought a massive $3.25 million mansion in Lake Forest, Illinois, while also listing his home in Plymouth, Michigan, for $1.1 million, with reports indicating a contract for the house is currently pending.

“Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson and his wife, Jessica, in March paid $3.25 million for a six-bedroom, 6,227-square-foot mansion in Lake Forest, not far from the Bears’ Halas Hall headquarters and offices,” Bob Goldsborough wrote for the Chicago Tribune. “The Johnsons on July 19 listed their four-bedroom, 3,940-square-foot house in Plymouth, Michigan, for $1.1 million, and the home currently has a contract pending.”

After selecting Williams to be their quarterback of the future with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, hopes were high that Chicago would be able to take a step forward immediately. A year of chaos ensued, due in large part to Matt Eberflus completely falling apart as the season went on. Now, Johnson has been brought in to clean up the mess.

The Bears have ample talent on both sides of the ball, but as an offensive mastermind, Johnson’s main goal is going to be to recreate what he built with the Lions on his new team. Having a cozy new home that’s close to the team’s facility certainly helps, and with expectations being set quite high for his first year in charge of the team, all eyes are going to be on Johnson to see what he can coax out of Chicago in 2025.
