Bears morning report: Theo Benedet emerges from the unknown

Theo Benedet figured he had at least a chance of winning the Bears’ starting left tackle job simply because the coaching staff told the offensive linemen that everyone did. It didn’t come into clearer focus, though, until last week, when he started playing with the first and second teams.

This week is his last chance to push for the starting job. The Bears will hold a padded practice Wednesday before playing in Kansas City on Friday night.

Benedet, who has never taken a regular-season snap, probably still trails Braxton Jones, who has 40 NFL starts. But he said he played better Sunday against the Bills than the week before against the Dolphins.

Benedet winning the starting job would be one of the biggest upsets in recent Bears training camp history. An undrafted rookie out of Canada a year ago, Benedet hurt his hamstring in the Hall of Fame Game and eventually spent the season on the practice squad.

When the offseason program started, he was an unknown to his new coaching staff.

“It’s not their fault — it’s nobody’s fault,” he said Tuesday. “There was just no film on me. … So it was kind of audition on the run there at OTAs, but I’m glad that they noticed.”

Smith was among three players competing for the starting cornerback spot opposite Jaylon Johnson.
Bagent is the Bears’ second-stringer.
The second-year tackle has a chance to start, though he likely trails veteran Braxton Jones.
