The San Francisco 49ers are pretty banged up heading into the 2025 campaign, which isn’t what the team wanted to see after injuries prevented their 2024 season from ever truly getting off the ground. One spot that has been hit hard in the early going is wide receiver, and the team received another brutal update on one of their veteran pass catchers on Wednesday.
Brandon Aiyuk, Jauan Jennings, and Ricky Pearsall are expected to be the 49ers’ top wideouts in 2025, but all three have dealt with injury issues during training camp. That has left DeMarcus Robinson as the top option at times, but the team has been dealt another brutal blow, as he’s set to miss the start of the upcoming season.
DeMarcus Robinson Picks Up Three-Game Suspension
Robinson was selected in the fourth round of the 2016 NFL Draft by the Kansas City Chiefs, and he eventually became a secondary playmaker for them on offense. His best season came in 2019, when he caught 32 passes for 449 yards and four touchdowns, helping the Chiefs take down the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LIV.
After six seasons with the Chiefs, Robinson signed with the Las Vegas Raiders in 2022, before getting released and latching on with the Baltimore Ravens. He would find his way to the Los Angeles Rams, where he spent the last two seasons. In 2024, Robinson emerged as the team’s third wide receiver behind Puka Nacua and Cooper Kupp, catching 31 passes for 505 yards and a career-high seven touchdowns.
That led Robinson to sign a two-year, $9.5 million contract with the 49ers in free agency, and his presence has been huge with all the other question marks at this position. However, Robinson himself has now turned into a question mark, as head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed that he’s set to miss the first three games of the season after getting suspended for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy.
“Yes,” Shanahan said when asked if Robinson had been suspended by the league. “You can always appeal it so we’ll hope for the best on that, but (three weeks) is what we’re planning for.”
49ers’ Wide Receiver Depth Chart Looking Even Lighter After DeMarcus Robinson’s Suspension

Robinson was set to play a big role in San Francisco’s offense to start the season, but now, the team has been forced to scramble and find other options. Aiyuk is going to miss the first few weeks of the season as he recovers from a torn ACL and MCL he suffered last year, and Jennings is dealing with a mysterious calf injury that has prevented him from practicing for much of training camp.
Pearsall appears to be healthy after dealing with a hamstring injury to begin camp, but other options are needed at wide receiver. After striking out on a potential trade for John Metchie III, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see the 49ers try to swing a deal for another wide receiver before Week 1 rolls around now that Robinson appears likely to miss time as well.
