WNBA Coach Has Concerning Update on Caitlin Clark’s Injury

WNBA fans waiting on Caitlin Clark to return will continue to have their patience tested.

It appears the Indiana Fever star has not made much progress lately in her recovery from a right groin injury.

“Until she can get into practice, and until you guys see her in practice, it’s really status quo, same as we’ve been,” Fever head coach Stephanie White said Thursday following practice, via the Indianapolis Star.

Clark has been sidelined since July 15. Injuries have limited the reigning WNBA Rookie of the Year to just 13 games.

What Injuries Has Caitlin Clark Had?

Clark sat out the preseason opener with a tight left quad, then missed two weeks due to an injury in the same muscle. Shortly after returning, Clark injured her left groin, which sidelined her another two weeks.

Adding to her injury woes, Clark tweaked her left ankle while working out earlier this month, per Scott Agness of Fieldhouse Files.

When healthy, Clark has been one of the WNBA’s most productive players. Building off her brilliant rookie season, Clark is averaging 16.5 points, 8.8 assists, 5.5 rebounds and 1.6 steals while shooting 36.3% from 3-point range.

But she has also dealt with bouts of inconsistency. Before she hurt her groin on June 24, Clark had missed 22 of 23 3-point attempts.

What are the Fever Saying About Caitlin Clark?

White said prior to Sunday’s game against the Connecticut Sun that Clark’s long-term health and wellness are of utmost importance.

“I think the experience through throughout the year, trying to come back quickly has also taught her that she needs to make sure she’s 100%,” White said. “Yes, every competitor wants to play, but at the same time, doing it the right way and making sure after we’ve had a couple setbacks that we’re prioritizing her long-term health and wellness is the most important thing.”

Indiana remains hopeful that Clark will return this season. The Fever (19-16) have nine games remaining, starting Friday against the Minnesota Lynx.

How Have Injuries Impacted the Fever?

Injuries have ravaged the Fever’s roster. Guards Sydney Colson (torn ACL), Sophie Cunningham (torn MCL) and Aari McDonald (broken foot) are all out for the season.
