Derrick Rose Reacts to Chicago Bulls’ Jersey Retirement Announcement

On Jan. 24, Derrick Rose‘s jersey will be raised into the rafters at the United Center, where it will forever hang alongside franchise greats such as Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, Bob Love, and Jerry Sloan.

The Bulls made it clear before last season’s D-Rose Night on Jan. 4 that they would retire the 2011 MVP’s jersey this season; however, no formal date was set.

On Thursday, the Bulls announced they will retire Rose’s jersey when the team hosts the Boston Celtics on Jan. 24.

In response, Rose took to Instagram, reacting to the news with a message for fans and the city of Chicago:

“The game has given me more than I ever could have imagined. From Englewood to the rafters, my story has always been about making the city proud. This isn’t for me, this is for Chicago.

“Peace and Love, Pooh.”

Chicago Bulls Set to Celebrate Derrick Rose All Season Long

In addition to announcing that they will be retiring Derrick Rose’s jersey on Jan. 24 the Chicago Bulls announced that they will be celebrating the 2011 MVP all season long.

On Thursday, the team released the following statement via NBA.com, revealing their plans to honor Rose throughout the year:

“No player will ever wear #1 again for the Chicago Bulls. The Bulls will celebrate the career and impact of Derrick Rose on the Bulls and City of Chicago by retiring his jersey #1 on January 24, 2026. Derrick will be celebrated throughout the season, including on four additional game dates where a collectible figurine will be given away at the gates while supplies last.”

Limited-edition figurines will be given away at the following games:

  • Nov. 4 vs. Philadelphia 76ers
  • Dec. 17 vs. Cleveland Cavaliers
  • Feb. 22 vs. New York Knicks
  • Mar. 19 vs. Cleveland Cavaliers

Each action figure will coincide with a notable moment from Rose’s career such as when he won Rookie of the Year in 2009, or when he became the youngest MVP in league history in 2011.

Looking Back At Last Season’s D-Rose Night

Last year, the Chicago Bulls honored the 2011 MVP with Derrick Rose Night, an event that brought the city together in celebration of the hometown star.

In addition to things like the D-Rose flower mural at Clybourn Park Court (seen below), Rose also opened up a flower shop in the city, where he took photos with fans.

The Bulls organization then decked out the United Center atrium with tons of memorabilia from throughout Rose’s career, giving fans a unique experience.

In attendance at the Jan. 4 game, of course, were plenty of Rose’s former teammates such as Joakim Noah, Luol Deng and Carlos Boozer to name just a few.

At the time, Rose used his halftime speech to both encourage his kids to pursue greatness, and redefine himself as a businessman in the wake of his retirement.

This year, however, when the Bulls organization raises his jersey to the rafters, it will be all about Chicago’s favorite son, the youngest MVP in NBA history, Derrick Rose.

In the meantime, you can watch his speech from last season below:
