Jets Urged to Sign 58-Sack Pass Rusher After Unexpected Injury

The New York Jets lost depth at a position that didn’t have a lot of depth to begin with.

Gang Green announced on social media that they have placed defensive end Rashad Weaver on injured reserve.

ESPN’s Rich Cimini explained on social media that means Weaver’s 2025 season is now over.

Jets analyst Joe Caporoso joined the “Flight Plan” podcast and explained what move he would like to see the team make before the start of the season.

“One more veteran [addition] at EDGE, you’d feel really good. It’s always like Jadeveon Clowney, who has been an almost Jet for about 10 years. Someone like that who could come in and play 15 to 18 snaps a game, minimize [Micheal] Clemons’ role a little bit, he is going to make the team but can you minimize the amount of snaps he is going to play then you are not dependemnt on I don’t know if it’s either [Eric] Watts or [Braiden] McGregor who ultimatley stick out,” Caporoso explained.

Clowney entered the NFL as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2014 NFL draft. Across his 11 years in the league, the former South Carolina product has collected 58 sacks, 139 quarterback hits, 15 forced fumbles, nine fumble recoveries, and 409 tackles.

NFL Insider Update on Clowney’s Future

Clowney, 32, was released by the Carolina Panthers on May 8 in a cap savings move.

NFL Insider Aaron Wilson said on Thursday, August 21 Clowney is in “vintage form, now talking with teams, [and] plans to sign before [the] season.”

Clowney told NFL Insider Josina Anderson on July 21 that he still planned on playing this season.

“I’ve been keeping in touch with four to five teams,” Clowney told Anderson over the phone.

Jets Filled Their Most ‘Glaring’ Need Ahead of the Season

On Wednesday, August 20, the Jets made a pair of trades to solidify the defensive tackle position.

Caporoso complimented the green and white for fixing their most “glaring hole” ahead of the season.

“It took maybe a little bit longer than we would have liked, but I will give credit to the Jets for watching training camp, agreeing with everyone that, oh my God, this is a real problem,” Caporoso said.

The Jets now have a “pretty credible defensive line rotation” after trading for Harrison Phillips from the Minnesota Vikings and Jowon Briggs from the Cleveland Browns, Caporoso said.

“Yes, I wish they had more depth at edge, but they still have time before Week 1, but this was the most glaring thing because teams were just going to be able to tee off on the Jets running the football,” Caporoso added.
