Jets Put Struggling Draft Pick on Notice Ahead of Eagles Preseason Finale

New York Jets wide receiver Malachi Corley is on thin ice heading into the preseason finale versus the Philadelphia Eagles.

Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic told Tim McMaster that Corley is the No. 1 player with the “most on the line” on Friday, August 22.

“The No. 1 [player] is kind of obvious, it’s Malachi Corley. I don’t even know what he could do at this point to make [the 53-man roster]. It feels very unlikely that he is going to make the roster. Like it would be surprising at this point, like that is how bad it has been this summer,” Rosenblatt explained on the “Flight Plan” podcast.

“I alluded to earlier, like you can usually tell from a coach like how they feel about a player and stuff like that. [Jets wide receiver coach] Shawn Jefferson was asked about Malachi Corley and the way he hesitated to even start the question. He was like, ‘Uh, Malachi, he is doing… good, he is working hard.’ That was kind of like the vibe and the same thing from [Aaron] Glenn and Tanner Engstrand. Usually, if the most you can say is that he is in the film room and he is working hard and not anything about football, that is kind of where you have a good read on the situation … I just don’t see him making it,” Rosenblatt added.

Jets Might Have Already Revealed Their Hand

ESPN’s Rich Cimini revealed the playing time numbers from the Week 2 preseason game versus the New York Giants.

Corley didn’t play in the game on offense until the fourth quarter, “save for 6 snaps on special teams.”

He ended up playing in 13 snaps, but Cimini said those snap percentages don’t “bode well for his prospects of making the 53.”

Insider Explains What Corley Needs to Save His Jets Career

ESPN’s Rich Cimini said, “Time is running out for the 2024 third-rounder. It may take a miracle to save him.”

Corley, 23, didn’t do anything during his rookie season. He appeared in nine games, made one start, caught three receptions, registered 16 receiving yards, and failed to score a touchdown.

It’s never good when you have as many jersey number changes (three) as you have career catches (three).

This offseason, with a new regime arriving, Corley battled injuries throughout the spring and early summer that limited his participation.

Silver Lining of This Jets-Eagles Game

Even if Corley is a dead man walking with the Jets, that doesn’t mean his NFL career is over as we know it.

This preseason finale against the Eagles is not only an audition for the Jets, but perhaps more importantly, for the rest of the league.

It would behoove Corley to take full advantage of this opportunity and strut his stuff on an NFL stage. There is a reason he was the No. 65 overall pick in the third round of the 2024 NFL draft. The talent is clearly there.

If he gets cut by the Jets, Rosenblatt said on the “Flight Plan” podcast that he could see him getting claimed on waivers by another team.
