Shane Lowry Drains Longest Putt in FedExCup Playoff History

After a slow opening round for Shane Lowry at the 2025 Tour Championship, the Irishman came back on Friday with a monstrous putt to boost his spirits. Just one day earlier, Lowry 3-putted on the 14th hole, today he stepped back on the same green and sunk a putt from more than 97 feet back.

Pep Talk from his Caddie

Lowry ended the first round of the Tour Championship with an even 70, featuring two bogeys and two birdies. On Friday however, his focus changed on the ninth hole after a pep talk from his caddie, Darren Reynolds.

“Darren said to me going down 9, ‘Just because everyone else is making birdies doesn’t mean you need to go after every flag; just play your own game, do your own thing.’ And that’s what I did on the back nine,” Lowry said. “Freed me up a little bit, but it is amazing what happens when a few putts start going in. It was a nice nine holes, nice round, and pretty happy to get myself up there.”

The rest of Lowry’s game was on fire, and he sunk the 97 ft 6 in birdie with a huge smile of achievement on his face.

“Its nice to do that.” Said Lowry. He went on to score four more birdies before the end of the day. He finished off the round with a 63, scoring an impressive 29 on the back 9.

ShotLink Era

Lowry’s incredible putt is not only the longest in FedExCup Playoff history, but the sixth longest on Tour in the ShotLink era.

The ShotLink era starts back in 2003 when the PGA tour implemented the use of ShotLink Technology to record every shot on Tour. Prior to tournament weekend, the course is mapped so a digital image of each hole exists. Then, lasers, radars, and cameras track and capture each and every shot made. The information is then shared worldwide within seconds of it happening.

Lowry’s Battle for a Ryder Cup Spot

Currently, Lowry sits at 6th in the European rankings, but is unable to score points this weekend while competing at the Tour Championship. Something that Lowry only found out about this week.

“Yeah, I only found out about that Monday. I thought I was guaranteed getting points this week. I thought I was going to be pretty much guaranteed on the team. Yeah, I was somewhat disappointed to hear that,” Lowry said when asked.

“But the rules were made at the start for qualifying, and that was it. I think I finished four points behind Tyrrell, which is pretty much a shot, which would have been nice. But obviously I don’t know what Rasmus is going to do this weekend, but it looks like he’s probably going to pass me up and I’m going to need a pick next week, so hopefully I get a nice phone call off Luke.”

Meanwhile, Rasmus Hojgaard is making moves to pass the Irish professional this weekend at the British Masters. A top-30 finish is all the Danish needs to take Lowry’s spot and secure his place on the European team. However, Lowry’s presence at the Ryder Cup is almost guaranteed. Captain Luke Donald will likely use one of his captain’s picks to ensure Lowry is present in New York.
