Danny Trejo Explains the Wild Story Behind His First Movie Role

Danny Trejo

Danny Trejo has one of the most unforgettable faces in Hollywood, but his big break didn’t come from years of auditions or drama school. Nope, his acting career kicked off with a total twist of fate; and let’s be real, it’s the most Danny Trejo story ever.

From Prison to a Movie Set

Trejo’s never been shy about where he came from, and in his words, “I got into movies because I was in prison. You don’t have to go to prison.” Straightforward, raw, and classic Trejo.

It all started when he wandered onto the set of the 1985 film “Runaway Train.” Someone spotted him and asked if he wanted to be in the movie as an extra. When Trejo asked “extra what?” the guy told him he’d be playing a convict. The kicker? They offered him $50 a day. Trejo laughed about it later, saying, “Me and Eddie laughed because we’d been doing that for free forever.” Yep… first gig, nailed it.

First Day, First Union Card

That little background role wasn’t just a one-and-done paycheck. It officially made Trejo a SAG actor. The wild part? He didn’t even realize how big that was until he got his first check. “I really just didn’t know what that meant until my first check came. And I’ve been doing it ever since.”

That moment turned into a career stacked with iconic roles… whether it’s a tough-as-nails ally in “Heat,” a scene-stealer in “Desperado,” or the unstoppable lead in “Machete.” One day on set changed everything.

Still Giving Back

Even with decades of movie credits under his belt, Trejo never left behind the part of himself that helps others. He reminded fans he’s still a drug counselor, especially in Sacramento. “Because all them guys want their picture taken with Machete,” he joked.

And let’s not forget Trejo’s food empire. His chain, Trejo’s Tacos, has become just as legendary as his movies, serving up street-style tacos, burritos, and even donuts. It’s another way he’s built something lasting for his community, blending his love of food with the same heart he brings to every role. Fans don’t just get to watch him on screen… they get to taste a little piece of his story.

This is what makes Trejo stand out. Not just the movies, but the way he owns his past while using it to lift others up. He could’ve been written off, but instead, he turned his life into something bigger than Hollywood fame. Or as he summed it up: he’s “never looked back.”
