DP World Tour Pro Fined After Incriminating Video

Sam Bairstow finds himself in the headlines after a video surfaced from the August 7th, 2025 Nexo Championship. The video, shot by a fan and later shared with DP Tour officials, resulted in a recent fine for the golfer. The initial details surrounding his disqualification were unclear, but as the video comes to light, players and caddies find themselves unimpressed with Bairstow’s actions.

The English professional mysteriously withdrew after his first round at the Trump International Golf Link’s Old Course. The 27-year-old signed for a 5 on the 14th hole. He had in fact, made a 7 on the par-4 hole. He signed for a final score of a one-over 73, when he had actually scored a three-over 75 . Bairstow disqualified himself after it was brought to his attention that he had made an error. But now, players and caddies alike are angry over the situation.

Scoring Error

In the video, Bairstow stands over a steep uphill lie. After a wayward tee shot, Bairstow found himself in the fescue, the ball well above his feet. As he prepares to take the shot, the ball drops deeper into the grass, into an even worse lie.

Bairstow’s actions seem to be the reason the ball moves. According to The USGA Rules of Golf, Bairstow should have picked up his ball and returned it to its original lie, taking a one-shot penalty in the process. Instead, Bairstow played the ball from the new lie. He then shot what he believed to be a bogey 5. In reality, he shot a 7. Failing to return the ball to its original lie cost him one stroke, and playing it from the wrong position cost him another.

According to The Telegraph’s James Corrigan, the fan who took the video shared it with DP Tour officials, who then brought the error to Bairstow’s attention. While Bairstow did eventually withdraw, he initially denied the wrongdoing until he reviewed the fan-shot footage.

Bairstow Fined

That seemed to be the end of things, until the video started to gain traction. As players and caddies got ahold of the footage, they started to voice their complaints over Bairstow’s error. The DP World Tour met, and ultimately handed out a £25,000 fine. In their statement shared with The Telegraph, the DP World Tour stated,

“After further investigation, Bairstow was found to be in breach of the DP World Tour’s Code of Behaviour and sanctioned accordingly. The player has a period of review to appeal the sanction.”
In response to the frenzy the video seemed to cause, Bairstow released his own statement in which he acknowledges and accepts the wrongdoing.
“I know I should have called a referee, and I really regret that I didn’t. I know who I am as a person, and so do the people who are close to me. I fully acknowledge by not calling a referee at the time, I didn’t play my part in respect of the Tour and my fellow players. After being shown the video after my round, I did what I could at the time by disqualifying myself from the tournament. I completely respect the Tour processes and I accept the additional sanction. I hope I can now move on and concentrate on playing the game I love.”
