One can strongly argue that the Atlanta Braves have been the most disappointing team in Major League Baseball this season, sitting at 58-71 and 17.0 games behind the first-place Philadelphia Phillies in the National League East. The Braves are 6-4 over their last 10 games, playing a bit better recently, but are still in fourth place in the NL East.Â
As they look ahead to the 2025-26 offseason, there will be many ways the Braves can go. Some believe they could be in the market for Toronto Blue Jays shortstop Bo Bichette, including MLB.comâs Mark Feinsand, who recently ranked him as a top-five free agent available, naming the Braves as a potential fit.Â
âAfter leading the AL in hits in 2021 and â22 and making his second career All-Star team in 2023, Bichette had a nightmarish 2024, playing in only 81 games — and unproductive ones, at that. This year, Bichette has looked like his old self, once again leading the American League in hits while hitting 16 homers with 82 RBIs and an .805 OPS in 125 games. The shortstop market will be thin this winter, putting Bichette in position to score big in his first foray into free agency.
âPotential fits: Blue Jays, Braves, Tigers,â he wrote.
Will the Blue Jays Keep Bo Bichette Long-Term?
With how well the Toronto Blue Jays have played over the past few months, sitting in first place in the loaded American League East by five games, there’s a good chance they won’t want to give up a player like Bichette.Â
However, his contract will be significant, which could help the Braves. If the Blue Jays aren’t willing to hand out the deal he could be looking for, with Jim Bowden of The Athletic writing that he should land a seven to eight-year deal, it’s possible the Braves could get in on him.Â
âBichette has had a solid bounce-back year, regaining his value after a brutal 2024 season. He leads the league in hits once again and has 35 doubles and 16 homers. He will enter free agency with the ability to play either shortstop or third base going forward. Bichette, who will turn 28 next March, should be able to land a seven- or even eight-year contract this winter,â he wrote.
Could the Braves land Bo Bichette as a Free Agent?
The Braves’ trade deadline was very questionable, not making any significant moves to lower payroll or add for the future.Â
According to Alex Anthopoulos, his focus at the deadline was on trying to improve the team for 2026 and beyond. However, as he stated to MLB.com, there wasn’t any opportunity for him to do so.Â
At the very least, however, this shows that the Braves are looking to improve heading into the next season, which should help them land a player of Bichette’s caliber if he walks.
âGenerally speaking, when it comes to trades, if we thought there was a trade where we were getting some value back that we liked, we would have made a trade or two or three or four,â Anthopoulos said. âThat didn’t present itself. Our goal in this Deadline was to try to get some form of help for 2026 and beyond.â
