Emma Heming Willis is bravely opening up about her husband and iconic actor Bruce Willis‘ struggle with dementia. Emma Heming shared that the earliest signs of Bruce Willisâ dementia appeared not on movie sets, but at home in their marriage. The man she knew as lively and affectionate began to grow quieter, leaving her searching for answers.

âFor someone who is very talkative and very engaged he was a little more quiet,â Emma recalled during the ABC special “Emma and Bruce Willis: The Unexpected Journey”.
How Bruce Had Quiet Struggles on Movie Sets

As Emma noticed shifts in their marriage, Willis also began to show signs of decline on set. Colleagues recalled moments when the action star, who âloved his job and loved to work,â struggled to remember lines, missed cues, or appeared confused. Rumors spread in Hollywood, but few knew the reason behind his struggles.

According to a report in the Los Angeles Times, Directors and crew members revealed that during the last years of his career, Willis relied heavily on support, including line-feeding through an earpiece, reduced work hours, and body doubles for most action sequences.
Emma reiterated that Bruce Willis has long lived with a lasting condition stemming from his work on “Die Hard”. The Christmas action classic is famous for its explosive sequences, but one scene used especially loud blanks to heighten realism. For Willis, the shot went off closer than expected, leaving him with permanent hearing damage.
In an interview with The Guardian, the actor revealed the toll it has taken, admitting he lost two-thirds of the hearing in his left ear. âDue to an accident on the first Die Hard, I suffer two-thirds partial hearing loss in my left ear and have a tendency to say, âWhaaa?ââ he said.
Disturbing Incidents Raised Concerns
Sawyer pointed out that Willis, who had always âloved his job and loved to work,â fueled rumors about his health when he started âmissing lines, forgetting cues, and sometimes appearing confused without reason.â
According to a report in the Los Angeles Times, published in March 2022, Several on-set incidents highlighted how far his condition had progressed. In the 2020 film âHard Kill,â Willis allegedly fired a prop gun loaded with a blank on the wrong cue.
Actress Lala Kent, who played his daughter, remembered being startled when it happened twice in a row. Crew members also recalled his confusion, with some directors expressing concern that Willis didnât fully understand his surroundings.
By this time, his management team had limited his shoots to no more than two days, each lasting eight hours, often wrapping up by lunch. Despite these setbacks, the actor still appeared in 22 films over four years, earning as much as $2 million for just a few days of work.
The Diagnosis That Explained Everything
In March 2022, Willisâ family announced he would retire from acting after being diagnosed with aphasia. A year later, they confirmed a more specific diagnosis: frontotemporal dementia (FTD), which affects speech, personality, and behavior.

Looking back, Emma admitted the early signs were âalarming and scary.â His once-lively personality had given way to distance, and his work had been marked by confusion and missed cues. âI didnât understand what was happening,â she said.
âI thought maybe it was just his hearing. But it was something far more serious.â
Despite all the struggles, Bruce and Emma continue to navigate this gut-wrenching journey with love, strength, and unwavering devotion.
