Former Cleveland Browns quarterback Tyler Huntley has landed in a familiar destination, signing with the Baltimore Ravens.
Huntley was released by the Browns over the weekend as the team cut their roster down to 53 players. He functioned as the fifth quarterback on the depth chart, behind starter Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett, Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders. The Browns brought in Huntley to eat up some reps with multiple players dealing with injuries in the preseason.
Huntley didn’t get a ton of time on the field but did enough to prove he’s still a capable backup. He completed 17 of 22 passes for 129 yards and a touchdown.
This will be Huntley’s third stop with the Ravens. He served as the primary backup to Lamar Jackson for three seasons and was named a Pro Bowler in 2022 after going 2-2 as the starter. He’ll start on the practice squad, with Cooper Rush currently slated to be the backup to Jackson.
He also signed with the Ravens last season after being released by the Browns. Huntley ended up being signed by the Miami Dolphins, where he started a career-high five games in relief of an injured Tua Tagovailoa.
The Browns also traded away Pickett to narrow down their quarterback room. Cleveland sent Pickett to the Las Vegas Raiders for a fifth-round pick.
Tyler Huntley Praised by Browns QB Shedeur Sanders
Huntley was never expected to be in the mix for a roster spot in Cleveland. However, he was able to prepare for the season and filled a veteran leadership role in a room that included two rookies.
Sanders, in particular, gave a shoutout to Huntley for some of the knowledge he shared on being a backup in the NFL.
“The fact that (Tyler) Huntley is here, I feel like God sent him here for a reason, honestly, just to talk and to be a guy, be a mentor toward me and his career also,” Sanders said. “Being in that backup role, he faced that also in his career and he just gave me the mentality on what I need to do and how I need to stay on top of everything.”
Browns Officially Establish Depth Chart
The Browns confirmed their quarterback depth chart on Tuesday. Flacco will be the starter, as previously announced, with Gabriel as his primary backup. Sanders will likely be the emergency third quarterback. He’ll only be able to enter the game if both Flacco and Gabriel are injured.
“I know my time, whenever that is, I’ll be ready for it and I’m going to embrace that, but in due time. I have many things I need to fix, many things I need to work on, and I’m not oblivious to that,” Sanders said previously. “So, all I look at it is that I’m getting more time to cook. I’m getting more time to warm up. That’s all it is.”
While Flacco will begin the year as the Browns’ starter, it’s unlikely he’ll hold the job for the entire season. Cleveland faces mounting pressure to evaluate its rookie quarterbacks before next year’s draft. With two first-round picks in hand, the Browns could position themselves to target one of the top passers in the class.
