Trade Pitch Lands Rams $26 Million Defender

The Los Angeles Rams set their 53-man roster with 5 cornerbacks on the roster ahead of the 2025-26 season.

Los Angeles attempted to get a CB1 in the offseason, including former Ram Jalen Ramsey, who was eventually traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Before Ramsey joined the Steelers, Rams head coach Sean McVay said he wouldn’t rule out a trade for the cornerback, showing that the team prioritized getting help in the secondary in some way.

With Ramsey no longer an option, LA will need to look elsewhere to get help at the cornerback position.

Bleacher Report’s Moe Moton made a bold trade prediction that has the Rams landing Cleveland Browns’ cornerback Greg Newsome II.

“As Matthew Stafford pushes to play with a back injury, Los Angeles should put less stress on the offense to outscore teams and invest more in its secondary,” Moton wrote. “The Rams may be able to pull off a trade for Newsome, who’s entering the last year of his rookie deal. The Browns’ quarterback situation, with 40-year-old starter Joe Flacco, limits their offensive upside and the possibility of finishing the 2025 season with a winning record.”

“By the trade deadline, the Browns may be strong sellers. Newsome would be an appealing asset. Though he’s coming off his worst season, the 25-year-old put together three consecutive solid campaigns as a versatile inside-outside cover defender… Newsome can strengthen the Rams’ pass defense, which ranked 20th in yards allowed in 2024.”

In exchange for landing Newsome, Moton writes that the Rams should give up 2026th 5th-round pick.

If the Rams were to trade for Greg Newsome, it could provide much-needed assistance to the secondary.

Despite having a down year last season, Newsome can be a reliable cornerback for the Rams. The former Northwestern Wildcat has intercepted the ball three times and has 34 career pass deflections.

The 2023-24 season saw Newsome have his best season, during which he recorded 14 PDs, 49 tackles, and 2 interceptions.

The Rams’ cornerback with the most pass deflections last season was Ahkello Witherspoon, who registered 9 PDs the previous season.

According to Over The Cap, Newsome will earn $13.37 million in the fifth year of his rookie contract.

Move To Los Angeles Can Interest Newsome

In his four years in Cleveland, Newsome and the Browns have only appeared in the playoffs once in the 2023-24 season.

In that game, the Browns lost to the Houston Texans 14-15, with Newsome logging 1 pass deflection and 4 tackles.

ESPN ranks Cleveland as the 30th team in the NFL after the 2025 Draft, which might convince Newsome of a possible move.

If he were traded to the Rams, he would be placed on a Super Bowl contender and higher on the cornerback depth chart, getting some quality playing time.
