Fan-favorite Korean center fielder Jung Hoo Lee has had a lot of iconic moments already in his San Francisco Giants career. But he was still searching for his first game-winning hit.
Until Thursday August 28, 2025 when Lee stepped to the plate against the Chicago Cubs with runners on first and second base, one out and the game tied 3-3 in the bottom of the ninth inning.
Lee crushed a single to right field off of pitcher Daniel Palencia, scoring pinch runner Christian Koss and delivering the Giants a 4-3 win over the Cubs. It was Lee’s second hit of the day.
The win gave the Giants a sweep over the Cubs, the only team in the MLB that hadn’t been swept this season. It also gave them their fifth straight victory overall, all against teams that are slated to make the playoffs.
Hopefully it’s the first of many clutch, walk-off hits for Lee.
Posey Recently Predicted Lee Will Have A Big 2026
In an interview on KNBR 680’s Murph and Markus show prior to the game on Thursday August 28, 2025, Giants president of baseball operations Buster Posey spoke about Jung Hoo Lee’s 2025 season.
Lee started the season playing like one of the best players in baseball, hitting .324 in the month of April. But Lee struggled in the summer months, hitting .143 in the month of June.
Overall, it’s been a solid season for Lee, who has hit .261 with 7 home runs, 48 RBI and 10 stolen bases.
But Posey thinks Lee could have an even better year in 2026, and that’s not because of any on-field results. It’s because of all the intangible, unseen trials and tribulations that Lee has gone through this season.
“You don’t really know what a major league season takes until you go through one,” Posey said (h/t NBC Sports Bay Area). “Between the amount of games played in a row, the travel across the country, the physical toll, the mental toll.”
Posey also said that he’s been encouraged by how Lee bounced back, and his recent hitting approach.
Big Series For Giants Stars
Lee wasn’t the only major star on the Giants to have a big moment against the Cubs. It seems like every Giants star had a great three-game set.
Third baseman Matt Chapman had a very solid series, going 4-for-11 with two home runs, 4 RBI and 3 runs scored.
Willy Adames had a great day Thursday, hitting two home runs. He also made two fantastic defensive plays during the series.
Rafael Devers was the big star of the series. He went 6-for-11 with two home runs (both hit on Wednesday), 6 RBI, and 5 runs scored. He also showcased some very solid defense at first base.
The pitching efforts are not to be ignored, either. Logan Webb and Justin Verlander both had great outings, and Carson Whisenhunt turned in a solid five innings as well.
It was maybe the most fun three games of baseball the Giants have played all season. As a result, lots of fans are taking peeks at the standings, wondering if the Giants still have a chance to make the playoffs. For their part, the Giants seem to believe.
