Knicks Insider Provides Huge Contract Extension Update On Mitchell Robinson

Mitchell Robinson has stood out as one of the most important players on the New York Knicks’ roster despite his injury history. With contract talks up in the air, one team insider provided a huge update regarding the center’s situation.

Robinson has been with the Knicks since 2018 when the team selected him in the second round of the 2018 NBA Draft. He got his opportunities early on, being a defensive spark plug off the bench with his athleticism and shot-blocking ability.

However, injuries continue to pile on him as he missed multiple games throughout his seven years in the league. He played 72 games at most in the 2021-22 season and 17 games at least in the 2024-25 campaign.

Knicks insider James Edwards III of The Athletic gave his outlook on Robinson’s contract situation. The big man last signed a deal in 2022 that was worth $60 million throughout four seasons. He enters the final year of that contract, which he will be due for an extension after that.

“The oft-injured big man was one of the most dominant players in the postseason, and he’s currently eligible for an extension,” writes Edwards. “The version of Robinson we most recently watched is an All-Defense candidate. He would be in the conversation for Defensive Player of the Year.”

“What team wouldn’t hold onto a player like that? Well, the Knicks know Robinson better than anyone, and he’s been unable to stay on the court due to various injuries. I’ve gotten the sense that New York would be willing to sign Robinson to a team-friendly extension that covers them in the event he continues to get hurt,” writes Edwards. “On the flip side, I’m sure Robinson points to his performances in the postseason and believes he can get one more nice deal from the Knicks or someone else if he’s able to stay healthy in a contract year.”

It will be crucial for the Knicks to decide how they approach contract extension talks with Mitchell Robinson.

They are well aware of the high value Robinson provides on the defensive side of the ball. However, his inability to stay healthy puts a firm cap on how much he can earn on his next deal. Nonetheless, the choice they make will be important in the long term for the Knicks.

Despite his injury-riddled season, Robinson averaged 5.1 points, 5.9 rebounds and 1.1 blocks per game in his 17 appearances. He was especially healthy in the playoffs, taking part in all 18 games for New York as they reached the East Finals. He produced 4.7 points and 7.8 rebounds per contest, specifically causing trouble for the Boston Celtics during the second round.

New York will look forward to next season as a potential title contender. Due to severe injuries on Boston and Indiana’s star players, the Knicks will be likely competing with the Cleveland Cavaliers for the right to represent the Eastern Conference.

They also added free agents Jordan Clarkson and Guerschon Yabusele this summer, improving their bench. As a result, this makes their squad a big threat for opponents to deal with in the 2025-26 season.
