The Seattle Seahawks‘ offense purged over 1,000 receptions, 14,000 yards, and 100 touchdowns off of their roster this offseason when they parted ways with both DK Metcalf and Tyler Lockett this offseason. Outside of Jaxon Smith-Njigba, the vacated targets by two productive veteran pass catchers feel completely up for grabs entering the first year under new offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak.
Despite the addition of Cooper Kupp in free agency and Tory Horton in the 2025 NFL Draft, one NFL writer believes Jake Bobo will be the breakout player in the Seahawks’ offense in 2025.
Yahoo Sports Names Seahawks WR Jake Bobo a Breakout Player for Seattle in 2025
Andrew Buller-Russ of Yahoo Sports certainly did not play it safe when naming his making the bold prediction that WR Jake Bobo will be the breakout player for the Seattle Seahawks in 2025.
“With the Seattle Seahawks cutting Marquez Valdes-Scantling, it should open up an easier path to playing time for the 6-foot-4 Jake Bobo,” wrote Buller-Russ. “Now 27 years old, Bobo has yet to top 200 yards in either of his first two seasons in Seattle. But as a big target, he could quickly emerge as a friendly weapon for Sam Darnold near the red zone.”
The idea that Bobo could see an expanded role in the Seattle passing offense with both Metcalf and Lockett no longer on the team sounds feasible, but loses a bit of steam after the organization signed veteran WR Cooper Kupp in free agency and drafted Colorado State WR Tory Horton this offseason.
Kupp led the entire NFL in receptions (145), receiving yards (1,947), and receiving touchdowns (16) back in 2021, while Horton has played well throughout training camp and the preseason — which likely led the organization to feel confident enough to release Marquez Valdes-Scantling ahead of the 2025 NFL season.
Making matters even trickier to believe in a breakout year for Bobo is him being placed in concussion protocol less than a week ago, which will keep him off the field while the team prepares for their Week 1 showdown against the San Francisco 49ers.
Can Jake Bobo Solidify the WR3 Role Alongside Jaxon Smith-Njigba and Cooper Kupp in 2025?
Bobo has had some nice moments in the NFL through his first two seasons, which included a career-best performance against the Arizona Cardinals back in Week 7 of his rookie year where he produced four receptions for 61 yards and a touchdown. Yet, there simply haven’t been enough opportunities playing behind Metcalf, Lockett, and Smith-Njigba to start his career.
Bobo has a total of 303 receiving yards and three touchdowns through the first 34 games of his NFL career. These numbers aren’t anything to scoff at, but the path to breakout season means he would have to likely triple his career production in 2025. This could be tricky to accomplish if he starts the year fourth on the depth chart again this season.
Ultimately, Smith-Njigba is going to be the focal point of this passing attack with Kupp playing a complementary role to the ascending former first-round pick. Horton appears to be ahead of Bobo in the WR3 battle on the depth chart.
Bobo should be a nice rotational part of this Seattle passing attack in 2025. Yet, unless an injury occurs to one of the top three names on the depth chart and Bobo lights it up when he sees an expanded role — then it is tough to envision the UCLA product delivering on this prediction in 2025.
