Katherine Ryan has revealed a rather tough pregnancy symptom as she opened up about her veiny vagina in a new podcast.
The comic, 42, appeared on the NearlyParents podcast with Jamie Laing, 36, and Sophie Habboo, 30.
The couple are expecting their first child, with Katherine currently pregnant with her fourth child, which led to both couples being very honest about their experiences during pregnancy.
‘My vagina, or my vulva rather, is BLUE,’ said the comic as the hosts immediately burst into laughter.
‘Blue. Like a smurf. Like an Avatar vag. And that is because of expanding blood vessels and pressure, after four babies.’
When asked if the ‘whole thing’ was blue, Katherine explained it was just blue veins in her vulva, which she described like an ‘elderly woman’s legs when she hasn’t had access to compression stockings’.
‘Like popping out of my actual vulva,’ she added.
What causes a blue vagina in pregnancy?
Per the Cleveland Clinic a blue vagina in pregnancy is also known as the Chadwick sign. It can be a potential early sign of pregnancy where your vulva, vagina and cervix turn a bluish colour. Sometimes, your genitals look purplish or purplish-red.
The Chadwick sign usually appears six to eight weeks after conception, when sperm fertilises an egg. But the bluish discolouration can show up as early as four weeks. This timeline corresponds with changes in your reproductive system to support a pregnancy. The Chadwick sign disappears during pregnancy or shortly after delivery.
It is not typically a symptom that causes pain.
Katherine added that she was advised to keep her legs elevated, but said that she was unable to do that as she works full-time.
Sophie then related to Katherine by revealing that she had a swollen vulva during her pregnancy, adding that it was one of the first signs she noticed.
Katherine reassured Sophie that everything would go back to normal after, which was her experience during pregnancy.
After the clip was shared on the podcast’s social media, Katherine then hilariously joked about her breasts in the video.
‘FOR GODS SAKE LOOK MY BOOBS ARE BLUE AS WELL 😭 😭 😭 😭 😭,’ she commented.
The Canadian star, who is expecting her fourth child, is already a proud mum of 16-year-old Violet and her children with Bobby Kootstra: son Fred, four, and daughter Fenna, two.
In the video, Katherine also revealed that she has eaten her placenta following pregnancies: ‘I did ingest my placenta. Though not like raw.
‘I know a spectrum of different women who’ve kept it in the freezer, have made smoothies, who’ve fried it, who’ve planted it.
‘I sent it away to a company, along with core blood, to a different company to harvest stem cells.’
Sophie and Jamie agreed that they should copy this trend and do this with their child’s placenta.
