Plenty of fans were quick to react to the news, with many confident that the five-time Grammy-winning artist cursed Sinner’s chances of going back-to-back in flushing Meadows.
“Carlos Alcaraz it is then.” – One wrote.
“All in on Alcaraz.” – Another added.
“Drake’s betting slip is almost as notorious as his courtside curse. Sinner might be sweating now.” – Another fan joked.
In the wake of Drake’s bet, it looks like Sinner is still sitting as the betting favorite to go all the way in Flushing Meadows on most major sports books.
Jannik Sinner Talks Alcaraz Rivalry
Heading into tonight’s quarterfinal match between Novak Djokovic and Taylor Fritz, which will decide who faces off against Carlos Alcaraz in the semifinals, it’s no secret that many fans are hoping for a Sinner vs. Alcaraz final.
Despite the fact that the two are natural competitive rivals on the court, off the court, the two are more than just peers. According to Sinner, they have a, quote, “good friendship.”
As he explained to ATPTour.com this week:
“I think that we have a good friendship also off the court. It’s something great to see,” Sinner said. “We see that this is possible, it’s not like you have to be enemies also off the court. Of course we are enemies when we step on the court, we try to play our best tennis. But it ends there. After the handshake, everything is fine again.”
Of course, heading into the semifinals, the stakes couldn’t be higher as the two jockey for position in the ATP standings.
Carlos Alcaraz Talks About Possibly Overtaking Jannik Sinner as World No. 1
While Jannik Sinner is sitting as the betting favorite to win this year’s US Open, the pressure is on the world No. 1 to defend his title.
Although the Italian star has looked dominant over the past two weeks, if world No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz winds up winning the final Slam of the year, he would overtake Sinner in the ATP rankings.
Following a dominant straight-set win over Jiri Lehecka on Tuesday, Alcaraz spoke about the high-stakes nature of this year’s US Open during his on-court interview:
“It’s really difficult not to think about it. Every time I step on the court I’m trying not to think about it. I think if I think about the number one spot too much I think I’m going to put pressure on myself and I just don’t want to do that. I just want to step on the court, try to follow my goals on the match and try to enjoy as much as I can.
“So the number one is there, but I’m trying not to think so much about it.”
