People reported that the episode, titled “Mother Love”, is scheduled to air on October 7 as the third episode of the season. In the episode, Warner plays Richard Buscombe, a protective father who becomes a prime suspect in a murder investigation after his ex-wife is killed shortly after returning to town.

Season 2 of the series kicks off September 23, with Warner’s episode airing two weeks later.

Playing a Father Caught in a Murder Investigation

Richard is described as a man still heartbroken years after his split, carrying both anger and pain while doing everything he can to protect his daughter. “His performance — as a struggling single dad, fiercely protective of his daughter — just glows with integrity,” showrunner and executive producer Ian Weir told People. “He found levels that I hadn’t imagined.”

Cast & Crew Remember Warner’s Talent & Character

Weir said the team was overjoyed when Warner signed on for the role. “We were really delighted when Malcolm agreed to join us as a guest star — and completely thrilled by the experience of working with him,” he recalled. “He was such a leader and a gentleman. It’s such a terrible, tragic loss.”

Fox also honored the actor in a statement, remembering his warmth as much as his talent.

“Everyone at FOX is heartbroken by the tragic loss of our friend and colleague, the extraordinary Malcolm-Jamal Warner. While his iconic roles — from comedic to dramatic — are unforgettable and timeless, Malcolm will be remembered most for his warmth, kind heart and the lasting impact he had on his friends, family and fans everywhere.”

Honoring His Life & Lasting Legacy

Weeks after his death, Warner’s mother launched the “Malcolm-Jamal Warner Living Legacy” Instagram account, where she shared a statement about her son’s life and impact.

“He was a kind, loving man with a huge heart for humanity,” it read. “Malcolm was an exceptional husband, father, and son — a man deeply in love with his life, his wife, and his daughter. He was in love with the magic of being an actor, always studying and honing his craft.”

Along with roles in “The Resident” and “Alert: Missing Persons Unit”, Warner’s career spanned decades and genres. His final appearance on “Murder in a Small Town” will now serve as a fitting farewell to a beloved star whose presence on screen and off left a lasting mark.
