Cowboys Superstar Takes Blame For ‘Humbling’ Mistakes in Opener

If you know anything about Dallas Cowboys wide receiver CeeDee Lamb, it’s probably that he makes the impossible look possible when it comes to catching the football.

For most of the season opener against the defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles on September 4, that was still Lamb.

After an hour-plus lightning delay, the impossible seemed to happen in another way — Lamb began dropping one pass after another with the game on the line.

While Lamb still led all players with 7 receptions for 110 yards on 13 targets it was cold comfort after the Cowboys’ 24-20 loss.

Lamb could be seen on the sideline patting his own chest as if to say “this one’s on me” after his final drop on 4th-and-3 with time winding down in the fourth quarter.

Lamb finished with 4 total drops, with 3 coming after the delay.

“That’s terrible,” Lamb said after the game. “I can’t point no fingers at nobody else. As a player, you pray for moments like this … God has a mysterious way of humbling you at times … but I just need to catch the damn ball.”

Lamb, who signed a massive 4-year, $136 million contract extension before last season, has been one of the singularly great wide receivers in the NFL since he was selected in the first round (No. 17 overall) of the 2020 NFL draft.

In 5 NFL seasons, he’s a 3-time NFL All-Pro and 4-time Pro Bowler, with 4 consecutive seasons of over 1,000 receiving yards.

Lamb’s Dropped Passes Equaled Loss For Cowboys

While the final drop by Lamb would have been a difficult catch, the previous 2 drops were absolute dimes from quarterback Dak Prescott that would have likely swung the game for the Cowboys.

“I’ve just watched CeeDee Lamb drop more passes in one game than Justin Jefferson has dropped in his entire career,” X user Alec from MN Sports wrote on his official account.

“CeeDee Lamb with the worst 7-110-0 performance in NFL history,” MB Fantasy Life’s Ian Hartitz wrote on his official X account.

“CeeDee Lamb had 7 drops in 2024 And 4 tonight in the 2025 season opener,” Cowboys reporter Clarence Hill Jr. wrote on his official X account. “This was uncharacteristic.”

One Of Greatest Wide Receivers in Cowboys History

Just 5 seasons into his career, it’s not outlandish to already call Lamb one of the greatest wide receivers in Cowboys history.

ESPN put Lamb at No. 4 on its list of the NFL’s best wide receivers in its annual preseason position rankings. Despite missing 2 games due to injury in 2024, he finished eighth in the NFL with 101 receptions for 1,194 yards and 6 touchdowns.

Lamb eclipsed 1,000 yards while playing without Prescott for the final 9 games of the season after his quarterback had to undergo hamstring surgery.

“Lamb has checked many boxes required by an elite receiver,” ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler wrote. “He had a banner season in 2023, with 135 receptions (league-high), 1,749 yards and 12 touchdowns. He has had no true down years. He’s a perennial All-Pro first- or second-teamer. And he can produce through adversity, including multiple injuries to Dak Prescott and a bad running game … Lamb has 496 career receptions, the second most through a player’s first five seasons behind Michael Thomas‘ 510. His 12 career games with at least 10 receptions are already the most in Cowboys history.”
