A fire has broken out in a nine-story building of flats in west London which used to be home to part of the BBC.

Around 100 firefighters were called to blaze just after 3am on Wood Lane in White City as it spread to the top floors, with residents in nearby buildings evacuated.

This includes a restaurant and an area of external decking and ducting, with a number of flats also potentially affected.

The London Fire Brigade and the Metropolitan Police have evacuated locals as a precaution with a rest centre being set up.

Footage from the LFB appears to show the Helios Building at Television Centre – the former home of the BBC – affected.

The broadcaster was primarily based out of the location until 2012, and the website for the Helios Building says it currently accommodates 162 homes, along with a gym and a 47-bedroom hotel.

Wood Lane is closed to traffic and people are advised to avoid the area.

Crews from Hammersmith, North Kensington, Kensington, Chiswick and surrounding fire stations were mobilised to the scene.

Two 32-metre turntable ladders are being deployed as water towers to help extinguish the fire from height.

The cause of the fire is not known.
