Rory McIlroy added to his storybook 2025 season with an unforgettable win at the Irish Open.
The Northern Ireland native won the tournament in a playoff, but it’s what he did just to force the extra time that sent Irish golf fans into an absolute frenzy. McIlroy, trailing Joakim Lagergren down the stretch looked like he’d come up just short before making an eagle at 16 to keep him alive.
Then, needing another eagle at the 18th hole to force the playoff, McIlroy did this:
Rory McIlroy Wins Emotional Homecoming at Irish Open
McIlroy and Lagergren played the par-5 18th to kick off the playoff and both made birdie after narrowly missing eagles. Things got easier from there for McIlroy, who benefited from Lagergren hitting it in the water as the duo played No. 18 again, and McIlroy was able to get in the house without much of a hassle.
McIlroy was overcome with emotion. In his walkoff interview with Sky Sports, with the crowd still chanting his name and singing for him, McIlroy explained why it’s so important for him to play (and win) his homecoming.
“I feel just so lucky that I get to do this, get to do this in front of these people,” he said as seen on Sky Sports. “The support has been absolutely amazing all week. I thought it was gonna be a nice homecoming, coming home with the green jacket and all that, but this has been absolutely incredible. This has exceeded my expectations. I’m so happy I can play the way I did this week for all of them and get the win.
” … This is absolutely incredible. I love coming home. I love playing in this atmosphere. Moments like this are what you’re going to remember when your career is over.”
Rory’s Storybook Season Continues
Long before the Irish Open, McIlroy’s 2025 season was going to go down as one of the best in his storied career. He completed the career grand slam in truly incredible fashion, another playoff win, outlasting long-time friend and Ryder Cup teammate Justin Rose to win the Masters.
But that was in addition to winning The Players (also in a playoff) as well as taking home the title at Pebble Beach earlier in the season.
