In terms of return on investment, this is probably just what the Green Bay Packers were looking for in terms of their first game with edge rusher Micah Parsons.
The Packers delivered the NFL’s most convincing signature win with a 27-13 win over their NFC North Division rival Detroit Lions and Parsons, in limited action, came up with a crucial sack of Lions quarterback Jared Goff late in the fourth quarter — an electric, magic moment at Lambeau Stadium that seemed to announce the Packers as legitimate Super Bowl contenders.
It was Parsons’ first sack with the Packers after a blockbuster trade on August 28 sent him from the Dallas Cowboys to Green Bay in exchange for 2 first round picks and Pro Bowl defensive tackle Kenny Clark.
“MICAH PARSONS IS RELENTLESS,” NFL on CBS wrote on its official X account.
Parsons Trade Shook Up NFL
The trade for Parsons shook up the NFL just days ahead of the start of the regular season.
“ESPN Sources: Cowboys are trading three-time All-Pro LB Micah Packers to the Green Bay Packers,” Schefter wrote on his official X account on August 28. “Parsons and the Packers already have reached agreement on a four-year, $188 million contract. David Mulugheta of Athletes First had a hand in the trade and ultimately negotiating the record-breaking contract that includes $120 million fully guaranteed at signing and makes Parsons the highest-paid non-QB in NFL history.”
Parsons, 26 years old, was the No. 12 overall pick in the 2021 NFL draft and is a 3-time NFL All-Pro and 4-time Pro Bowler through his first 4 seasons.
“Thank you Dallas ….. GO Pack Go!” Parsons wrote on his official X account following the trade.
First Green Bay Sack Sends Social Media Spinning
Parsons was a topic of discussion even when he wasn’t playing in Week 1 thanks to his old team playing in the NFL season opener on Thursday night against the Philadelphia Eagles — a 24-20 Cowboys loss in which it was sorely obvious how much they missed their former star player.
“Micah Parsons at Lambeau Field,” ESPN’s Lindsey Thiry wrote on her official X account. “Loud ovation when he emerged from the tunnel.”
“This is why you make the trade,” CBS color commentator Tony Romo said during the broadcast after another pressure by Parsons.
What’s incredible and worth saying again is Parsons was playing with a pitch count and a sore back that bothered him all through the preseason.
“Micah Parsons played 45% of the defensive snaps (29 of 65),” Packers reporter Rob Demovsky wrote on X. “Parsons finished with 3 pressures, 2nd most on the Packers (Lucas Van Ness had 4).”
In what should be one of the most anticipated and most watched games of the regular season, the Packers travel to face the Cowboys on September 28 — a prime time Sunday Night football matchup.
Exclusive Club Of NFL Pass Rushers
Parsons is part of an exclusive club of pass rushers in NFL history.
Only 2 players in NFL history have had at least 12 sacks in each of their first four seasons; Parsons and the late Reggie White, a Pro Football Hall of Famer and a 2-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year.
White, who died in 2004, finished his career with 198.0 sacks in 15 NFL seasons, including a Super Bowl win with the Packers following the 1996 season.
