Maple Leafs Trade Pitch Adds Interesting Forward

The Toronto Maple Leafs undoubtedly had an interesting offseason. They most notably dealt Mitch Marner to the Vegas Golden Knights for Nicolas Roy in a major sign-and-trade deal. The Maple Leafs also brought in other players, like Dakota Joshua, Matias Maccelli, and Henry Thrun.

However, when looking at the Maple Leafs’ roster, it is fair to argue that they could use another skilled forward. One player who could make sense for them to take a chance on because of this is Detroit Red Wings winger Jonatan Berggren.

Heavy Sports has a trade proposal where the Maple Leafs acquire Berggren in a late-summer swap.

Maple Leafs Get:

  • Jonatan Berggren

Red Wings Get:

  • David Kampf
  • 2027 Fourth-Round Pick

Berggren & Maple Leafs Could Be Good Match

Questions about Berggren’s future with the Red Wings have come up for quite some time. It is understandable, as the 25-year-0ld forward has had trouble hitting his full potential with the Red Wings. Furthermore, he simply does not seem to be the best fit on the Red Wings’ roster at this point. Thus, it would be understandable if the Red Wings were open to moving him for the right price.

Yet, when looking at the Maple Leafs’ roster, Berggren would have the potential to be a decent pickup. He would provide them with more depth at the right wing position, at a minimum, but also could compete for a spot in Toronto’s top nine if he breaks out.

In 75 games this past season with the Red Wings, Berggren recorded 12 goals and 24 points. However, he also demonstrated promise during his rookie year with Detroit in 2022-23, recording career highs with 15 goals, 13 assists, and 28 points in 67 games. Perhaps getting a change of scenery with the Maple Leafs could help him take that next step offensively and blossom into a 20-goal scorer.

With the Maple Leafs losing Marner, they should not be afraid to take a chance on young players with upside. Thus, Berggren could be worth taking a flier on.

Why Maple Leafs Could Land Berggren With This Trade Offer

With Berggren still being young and having solid potential, the Red Wings would look to get a decent return in any potential trade. Because of this, the Maple Leafs offering Kampf and their 2027 fourth-round pick could be enough to get this deal done.

Kampf has been the subject of trade rumors all offseason, and this has only continued with the 2025-26 season almost here. In fact, the Fourth Period’s David Pagnotta recently reported that the Maple Leafs are still looking to trade Kampf.

“Also on the Leafs, forwards David Kampf and Calle Jarnkrok remain available for trade,” Pagnotta wrote.

Kampf could make sense as a target for the Red Wings. His solid defensive play and success at the faceoff dot would make him a nice pickup for Detroit’s bottom six and penalty kill. With this, the 30-year-old would have the potential to be a strong fit on the Red Wings’ roster, especially given their needs right now.

Yet, with Kampf being older and more expensive than Berggren, the Maple Leafs would also likely need to include a sweetener in a potential deal. Thus, sending their 2027 fourth-round pick with Kampf could be enough.
