A California Highway Patrol motorcycle officer suffered major injuries Monday afternoon when he was struck by a motorist on Interstate 280 near Los Altos Hills, according to the CHP.
The crash happened around 1:40 p.m. in southbound lanes of I-280 south of Page Mill Road, the CHP said in a news release. At the time, the officer was conducting a traffic break to remove an electric leaf blower that had fallen between the two left lanes.
The emergency lights on the motorcycle were activated, but a driver in a 2026 Tesla Model Y “failed to yield to the officer and crashed into him,” according to the CHP.
The officer was taken to an area hospital with injuries that were considered major but not life-threatening, the CHP said.
The driver stopped at the scene and is cooperating with investigators, according to the CHP. It was not known if the driver was using autopilot or other driving aids at the time of the collision.
The left three lanes of southbound I-280 are closed for an investigation. There is no estimated time to reopen the lanes.
