Two Colorado restaurants from opposite ends of the state are included in the New York Times’ compilation of the “best places” to eat in the United States, an annual list released Tuesday.
In its 2025 Restaurant List, the Times food critics included Bin 707, a New American restaurant in Grand Junction, and Mezcaleria Alma, a modern Mexican restaurant in Denver, as two of 50 restaurants representing the best of what American cuisine has to offer.
In its entry for Bin 707, located at 400 Main St. in Grand Junction, the Times wrote, “chef Josh Niernberg goes for playful, even risky, flavor combinations, and you will wonder if he can pull them off.”
“It’s just a magnetic restaurant, with the most stylish dining room this side of the Rockies, or at least on the Western Slope,” the Times’ Brian Gallagher wrote.
Earlier this year, Niernberg was nominated for Outstanding Chef at the annual James Beard Awards, his fourth nomination.
Gallagher described Mezcaleria Alma, at 2550 15th St. in Denver, as the “vivacious younger sibling” of Alma Fonda Fina, Curiel’s Michelin-recommended restaurant. Named after Curiel’s mother, both established the chef as a rising star in Denver’s food scene.
This year, Curiel opened his third restaurant, Alteño, where he said the cooking is inspired by his father’s home state of Jalisco, Mexico. A few months later, Alma Fonda Fina was nominated for Best New Restaurant at the annual James Beard Awards.
