Chargers Show Faith in WR Room With Sudden Roster Cut

The Los Angeles Chargers have made an early-season roster move, releasing wide receiver Jalen Reagor from the practice squad with an injury settlement.

Reagor, a former first-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft by the Philadelphia Eagles, joined the Chargers this offseason in hopes of revitalizing his career after previous stops with the Minnesota Vikings and the New England Patriots.

Chargers Release Jalen Reagor with Injury Settlement

Reagor’s time with the Chargers was brief, and his release raises questions about how the team views its depth at wide receiver. The 26-year-old was brought in largely as a low-risk, high-reward option, someone who can contribute as a depth piece and potential return specialist. However, injuries quickly derailed those plans.

By choosing to move on with an injury settlement, the Chargers have effectively decided that the current state of their wide receiver room provides enough confidence to carry the unit forward without Reagor. It also signals the team’s desire to stay flexible with its practice squad roster, leaving open the possibility of bringing in another player who could provide immediate availability.

Confidence in the Chargers’ Wide Receiver Room

While Reagor’s release might initially appear to thin out the depth chart, the Chargers’ confidence in their wide receiver group seems stronger than ever.

Head coach Jim Harbaugh commented on the impressive performance from the wide receiver group during their opening game against the Kansas City Chiefs, saying, “Wasn’t that cool to have Keenan Allen and Ladd [McConkey] and Quentin [Johnston]?”

The trio finished with a total of 18 catches for 221 of quarterback Justin Herbert’s 318 yards and three touchdowns.

“They’ve done it all camp and all of OTAs,” Herbert said. “They just make plays and make my job so much easier just having those guys out there, especially those three. It’s definitely tough on defenses.”

Johnston provided some more insight, saying, “We take everything from the meeting room to the practice facility and take it to the game. Which we saw today.”

McConkey, who’s in line to be Herbert’s top target this season, said, “We always preach after somebody catches the ball, everybody turns into a blocker. It’s something that we work on and just chasing the ball. As long as everybody is chasing the ball, we’re in the right position.”

Ultimately, while the loss of Reagor removes one more name from the depth chart, it hardly dents the Chargers’ confidence in their wide receiver group. If anything, the move underscores how secure the organization feels about its current options.

For Reagor, the hope remains that he can recover from his injury and find another opportunity elsewhere in the league. For the Chargers, the message is clear: they believe they already have the right mix of talent at wide receiver to succeed.
