After Cairo Santos’ miss, Bears add kicker Jake Moody to practice squad

After Cairo Santos missed a 50-yard field goal Monday night and failed to boot the ball through the back of the end zone when instructed to do so, the Bears added some kicking competition Friday.

Jake Moody, whom the 49ers cut Tuesday after two-plus disappointing seasons, agreed to join the Bears’ practice squad.

Moody was a third-round pick of the 49ers in 2022 but missed 16 of his 62 field goal tries over 32 games. On paper, Moody doesn’t seem to be the obvious answer on long kicks. He’s gone 6-for-12 on field goal attempts of at least 50 yards in his career. During the same span, Santos is 15-for-18.

Sunday, Moody missed a 27-yard kick off the upright and had a 36-yarder blocked.

“He’d have to say why, but it looked like he lost his confidence and he wasn’t kicking the ball well enough and was way too inconsistent,” 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said after the team cut him.

Santos took the blame for not making solid enough contact on the field goal or the kickoff Monday night against the Vikings.
