For the second week in a row, the quarterback that torched the Bears won the NFC Offensive Player of the Week award.
Wednesday, it was Lions quarterback Jared Goff who took the honor. In Sunday’s 52-21 win at Ford Field, Goff threw for five touchdowns, 334 yards and a 156 passer rating.
A week earlier, Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy became the first quarterback since Steve Young to overcome a double-digit deficit in the fourth quarter in his first career game. He won the award.
The 8.8 yards per play the Lions averaged against a weak Bears defense was a franchise record. The Bears hadn’t given up that many yards per play since at least 1977. To make matters worse for the Bears, they lost star cornerback Jaylon Johnson, likely for the season, because of a groin injury. Linebacker T.J. Edwards hurt his hamstring after missing the first game with a similar injury.
The Bears face the Cowboys, who scored 40 points in a win against the Giants, this week.
Eberflus, now the Cowboys’ defensive coordinator, returns to Soldier Field on Sunday and will face his former quarterback.
