The “Dawsonâs Creek” reunion at Broadwayâs Richard Rodgers Theatre on Monday, Sept. 22, opened with an unforgettable moment: a surprise video tribute from Steven Spielberg.
The legendary filmmaker, whose work famously inspired the showâs main character, Dawson Leery, praised the teen drama for its cultural impact and its legacy.

Here’s what Spielberg said in the heartfelt message.
He also recognized the nightâs charitable cause, noting how the cast was helping raise money in the fight against cancer. Fans erupted in cheers as his face appeared onscreen, making the event even more emotional.
James Van Der Beekâs Loving Video Message

Though James Van Der Beek could not attend due to illness, his presence was still deeply felt. The actor recorded a special video message that played before the audience.
âI canât believe Iâm not there,â Van Der Beek, 48, said. âI canât believe I donât get to hug my cast mates, my beautiful cast in person, and I just wanted to stand on that stage and thank every single person in this theater for being here tonight. From the cast to the crew to everybody who donated their time and has been so generous. And especially every single last one of you. Youâre the best fans in the world. Thank you for coming.â
He then revealed the nightâs surprise âunderstudyâ stepping in to play Dawson Leery: none other than Lin-Manuel Miranda.
Family Support & Cast Celebration
Even though Van Der Beek was grounded in Austin, his wife, Kimberly, made sure he was included.
She filmed fans lined up outside the theater and shared the excitement with him. Kimberly also confirmed on social media that she attended the reunion with their six children â Olivia, Joshua, Annabel, Emilia, Gwendolyn, and Jeremiah.
The kids later joined the cast on stage to sing the showâs iconic theme song âI Donât Want to Wait,â creating one of the nightâs most heartwarming moments.
Van Der Beek joked in his message, âNow, obviously, on Dawsonâs Creek, I had an understudy. But this is Broadway.â He then introduced Miranda, calling him âa ridiculously overqualified replacementâ who his kids would âconsider an upgrade.â
Williams, Holmes, and Jackson were joined by Mary Beth Peil, John Wesley Shipp, Mary-Margaret Humes, Nina Repeta, Kerr Smith, Meredith Monroe, and Busy Philipps. Together, the cast raised money for F Cancer, turning the reunion into both a celebration of the showâs lasting bond and a powerful tribute to their beloved co-star.
