Awkward: Daniel Jones Doesn’t Catch Eli’s Joke (video)

This week’s Monday Night Football game saw the Detroit Lions travel to Maryland to take on the Baltimore Ravens. The Ravens ended up taking the Lions down 38-30, but that wasn’t the most entertaining part of the evening.

Does anyone ever watch the ManningCast on ESPN? Early in the season, it’s much easier to just watch the game especially when all the games still seem monumental and no one really knows who is good and who isn’t.

Later in the year, the ManningCast is brilliant when you get fed a dog with no playoff implications and you don’t have anyone going in your fantasy game. On Monday night, Peyton and Eli Manning had Indianapolis Colts‘ quarterback Daniel Jones on as a guest and it seems like Eli’s initial joke went right over his head.

“Let’s welcome in the quarterback of the Indianapolis Colts and my former teammate Daniel Jones,” said Manning. “D.J., your Colts are 3-0 and lead the NFL in scoring. My question is, do you agree with my take that you are already the greatest quarterback in Indianapolis Colts history?”

Of course, Peyton was laughing while he asked it, but Jones didn’t seem to understand the obvious.

Daniel Jones has a long way to go to catch Manning

Peyton is hands-down the best quarterback in Indianapolis Colts history, with historians no doubt claiming that Johnny Unitas or Mike Pagel is the best in team history.

In 13 seasons with the Colts, Manning completed 64.9% of his passes for 54,828 yards, 399 touchdowns and 198 interceptions. He also went to two Super Bowls and won one of them. Not for nothing, but Manning also never missed a game in his Colts’ career, starting all 16 games from 1998-2010.

So far, Jones has started every single one of his three games with the team and has an impeccable 3-0 record, something Manning never achieved.

Joking aside, Daniel Jones has been incredibly efficient

ESPN’s Dan Graziano was being a bit hyperbolic, but noted recently that Jones could be considered in the MVP conversation. Most would highly doubt that he’ll think that in Week 13, but his point remains. Jones has been a pleasant, job-saving surprise so far for general manager Chris Ballard and head coach Shane Steichen.

“Through the first two weeks, Jones — the reclamation-project quarterback the Colts signed to compete with former No. 4 draft pick Anthony Richardson Sr. for their starting quarterback job — ranked second in the NFL in passing yards, first in yards per attempt, sixth in Total QBR and had three rushing touchdowns on top of all that,” Graziano writes. “He kept it rolling, completing a cool 18 of 25 passes for 228 yards in a more Jonathan Taylor-centric lopsided victory over the Titans.”

Considering Jones has been the butt of many NFL jokes for years now, it’s very impressive that the Colts have punted just once all year and he hasn’t thrown a single interception. Raise your hand if you thought that was going to happen.

It’s actually more important what he’s not doing, rather than what he is doing. His lack of turnovers is far more impressive than his overall passing numbers, as he’s thrown for just 816 yards and three touchdowns.

If he can perform at this level for another few games, he’ll be thrown into the same conversation with Manning for sure.
