The Tennessee Titans sit at 0-3 on their season and are already facing challenging questions.
In an attempt to right his ship, Titans head coach Brian Callahan has decided to shake things up.
ESPN Insider Adam Schefter reported that Brian Callahan is giving up his playcalling duties.
It is a bold move for Callahan, who hands over the keys to Hardegree just three weeks into the season.
An early-season gamble certainly could make a difference, but it also shows how badly the Titans are looking to gain a spark.
The Titans need to change the course of their season quickly if they are going to make any kind of noise at season’s end.
Hardegree Gets The Nod
With the news that Hardegree will now handle playcalling, some might have expected another member of the Titans staff to be the one chosen for the role.
Titans offensive coordinator Nick Holz was another name in the pool, but Callahan chose to go in another direction.
Prior experience was a main reason why Callahan chose Hardegree, per ESPN Reporter Turron Davenport.
In addition, Hardegree was the interim offensive coordinator for the Las Vegas Raiders for 9 games of the 2023 season.
His offense averaged 22.8 PPG and 308.4 YPG during that time.
The Raiders went 5-4 during that span, and Hardegree had rookie quarterback Aidan O’Connell under center.
For a team looking for a spark, Hardegree could be the one to give the Titans some life in the wins column.
Moreover, the success that Hardegree had with a rookie quarterback in O’Connell also looms large in this decision as Cam Ward continues his rookie campaign.
Callahan is betting that Hardegree will be able to unlock the offense and give Cam Ward continued looks for success.
Cam Ward Offers Hope Amid Titans’ Struggles
Despite not having a win so far this season, there is still a light that shines in Nashville.
Through three games, rookie quarterback Cam Ward has been the spark.
While Ward has been far from perfect, he continues to show flashes that stand out over the course of the season.
His arm strength shows up on certain throws, his mobility has bought extra time to make plays, and his toughness continues to stand out.
Ward’s growth will define how the rest of the season feels.
If he can continue to take steps, the Titans will be able to stomach the struggles that may occur over the season.
A quarterback who has a successful rookie campaign gives a franchise hope, despite what the standings might say.
Ward brings energy, playmaking ability and with Hardegree now calling plays, the offense may lean into his strengths more aggressively.
For the Titans, this season is about building and finding confidence for what lies ahead.
Callahan relinquishing his playcalling duties shows that they continue to search for success.
Bo Hardegree will have an opportunity to work and call plays for an enticing young quarterback in Ward.
With the Titans’ new look duo, this team could get the push it needs to string together some successful Sundays.
The Titans may be winless, but they aren’t hopeless.
