Jets Named ‘Potential Suitor’ for Former Super Bowl-Winning QB

Just three weeks into the 2025-26 season, the New York Jets find themselves struggling to establish a winning program. The Aaron Glenn era has flashed early on, but the result is an 0-3 squad that can’t get off the ground.

One of the culprits is the quarterback position. After an excellent Week 1, starter Justin Fields went down with a concussion in Week 2. Backup Tyrod Taylor got the start in Week 3, only to play a mixed bag of a game and lead a comeback that ultimately fell short.

There’s still plenty to sort out at that spot for Gang Green. Does an external addition make sense? One outlet is making the case for it ahead of Week 4.

Analyst Names Jets ‘Potential Suitor’ for Giants QB Russell Wilson Via Trade

In a story for Bleacher Report, Kristopher Knox outlined the Week 4 NFL trade block big board. On it, New York Giants quarterback Russell Wilson got listed. Knox pegs his projected trade value as a conditional 2026 fifth-round pick.

Knox’s potential trade suitors for Wilson include the Jets and the Cincinnati Bengals.

“While Wilson has only looked good in one of his three outings this season, he’s a very experienced starter who could potentially fill in for one of the myriad of injured quarterbacks for a game or two,” Knox wrote. “Perhaps more importantly, Wilson’s $2 million base salary would make him a reasonable target for virtually any team. That’s why Wilson makes our list and Atlanta Falcons backup Kirk Cousins—who has a $27.5 million base salary—does not.”

Wilson, who turns 37 in late November, has experienced quite the season thus far. He struggled immensely in Week 1, completing just 46% of his passes in a 15-point loss. Week 2 was a vintage performance, as he exploded for 450 passing yards and 3 touchdowns. Sunday Night Football’s effort against the Kansas City Chiefs then got him benched. Wilson threw for 160 yards and a pair of interceptions.

With the Jaxson Dart era now underway for the G-Men, Wilson becomes expendable. Given the affordable nature of his contract and the short term of it (he’s a free agent in the spring), he’s an intriguing candidate for a team needing a signal-caller.

Best Move for New York Is Standing Pat With Current QB Group

It’ll take more than an aging quarterback to save the Jets, though. Simply put, it doesn’t make much sense whatsoever for them to acquire Wilson. At this stage of his career, he’s far from the Pro Bowl-caliber quarterback he once was with the Seattle Seahawks. His 2024-25 stint with the Pittsburgh Steelers was respectable, albeit not franchise savior-worthy.

Wilson may be an improvement over Taylor, but that would reek of making a move just to do it. Taylor is an experienced veteran with a better mastery of the offense. He’s also making a significant chunk of money for a backup ($6M base salary for 2025), which signals the team’s belief in him. New York trusts Taylor as both a player and a leader.

Acquiring Wilson also leaves out the entire plot of this year. The Jets signed Fields to a two-year deal in hopes of figuring out who he is. Is he someone who will go down as a bust of a former first-round pick? Can he finally cash in on his upside in his age-26 or age-27 seasons? New York’s roster isn’t suited for contention right now. It can afford to live with its current situation until the offseason.

Heck, Glenn won’t even reveal what his true thoughts are between Fields and Taylor. Putting another candidate in the mix doesn’t seem to be a fit, even barring another injury.
