Brat Pack fan-favorite, Andrew McCarthy, is reflecting on the friendships that shaped his life on and off screen. The âSt. Elmoâs Fireâ and âPretty in Pinkâ star announced he is releasing a new memoir titled âWho Needs Friends: An Unscientific Examination of Male Friendships Across America.â
Andrew McCarthy Announces New Memoir On Friendship
On Sept. 24, McCarthy, 62, revealed details about his latest project, sharing that the book was inspired by a 10,000-mile road trip across 22 states. âI set out on the road to see some old friends I hadnât seen in years,â McCarthy wrote in his announcement.
â10,000 miles and 22 states later, Iâd spoken to dozens and dozens of men about the role of friendship in their lives. What I found shocked me and opened my eyes. And I gathered it up into âWho Needs Friends.â Itâs available for preorder at the link in bio. And will be published 3/24/26.â
According to People, McCarthy visited places such as Appalachia, the Mississippi Delta, and the Rocky Mountains, speaking with cowboys, musicians, and teenagers. The candid conversations led him to reflect on why men often struggle to maintain meaningful friendships.
From Brat Pack Fame To Acclaimed Writer
Though he has continued acting, McCarthy has also built an impressive career as a writer. In a 2012 interview with “On The Red Carpet,” he explained how he convinced an editor at National Geographic Traveler to let him write his first piece.
âEventually I said, âLet me write it, if it doesnât work, you donât pay me.â And he went, âI can live with that.â So I did a piece for him, and that worked out, so I did more for Traveler.â
Since then, McCarthy has contributed to The Atlantic and The New York Times and published several books, including the young adult novel âJust Fly Away,â the memoir âBrat: An â80s Story,â and âWalking with Sam,â which chronicled his 32-day journey across Spain with his son.
His new memoir comes as âSt. Elmoâs Fireâ celebrates its 40th anniversary. Sony Pictures and McCarthy announced that the newly restored 4K version of the 1985 film will return to select theaters starting Oct. 17.
âYour fave â80s crew is back on the big screen. Celebrate the 40th Anniversary of St. Elmoâs Fire, newly restored in 4K and back in select theatres starting October 17th,â the studio shared.
âWho Needs Friends: An Unscientific Examination of Male Friendships Across America,” published by Grand Central Publishing, will hit shelves on March 24, 2026.
