An offseason priority for the San Francisco Giants is going to be adding proven, veteran starting pitchers to their staff, and current St. Louis Cardinals right-hander Sonny Gray fits that bill perfectly.
Gray, 35, is set to still be under contract with St. Louis next season with a full no-trade clause.
However, after his most recent outing, which came against the Giants on Wednesday September 24, 2025, Gray admitted that he is not too happy in St. Louis.
“I don’t know what that [future in St. Louis] looks like for me yet,” Gray said (h/t MLB.com). “I have enjoyed my time [with the Cardinals], and I’ve loved the people. But I came here to win. I signed here two years ago with the expectation of winning and trying to win, and that hasn’t played out that way. But I want to win, and I expect to win. I came here with the expectation to win, so I don’t know.”
The Giants beat the Cardinals 4-3 to officially eliminate them from playoff contention, so that likely added to Gray’s frustration. He even admitted he may consider requesting a trade.
“I think I do [have to consider a trade request], to be frank and be honest,” Gray said. “Having said that, whether I do decide I want to go somewhere — whether that actually happens — I still don’t have complete control of that. Obviously, I have control over where I can’t go or don’t go, but I think I do [have to consider a trade]. I’m going to be 36 and it’s going to be my 14th season and the last year of my contract. I don’t know what the future holds for me.”
Giants Have Been Tied To Gray In The Past
Just over two weeks ago, on September 7, 2025, Giants insider Susan Slusser released an article in which she reported that Sonny Gray is “on the Giants radar” and “very much a potential trade target” for them this offseason.
Gray is still a popular figure in the Bay Area because he pitched for the Oakland Athletics from 2013-2017. Each of those seasons, he played for current Giants manager Bob Melvin, which could be a draw to bring him to San Francisco if Melvin is still around next season. Gray was reportedly fond of Melvin while he was in Oakland.
The Giants have a recent history of bringing old Oakland Athletics players to SF, including superstar third baseman Matt Chapman. Former A’s fan favorite Mark Canha also spent time with the Giants in 2024.
The Giants would certainly be glad not to have to face Gray anymore. He seems to be at his best against San Francisco, including when he took a perfect game into the seventh inning against San Francisco in 2024 and a no-hitter into the sixth in 2025.
Overall in his career against the Giants, Gray has made 9 starts and accumulated a 4-1 record with a 3.16 ERA and 51 strikeouts in 51.1 innings. Wednesday was his first career start at Oracle Park.
Would Gray Like The “Direction” Of The Giants?
The issue with a Gray-Giants pairing is that within Gray’s comments, he said he wants to win, and doesn’t feel great about the trajectory of the Cardinals, and he wants to win.
San Francisco is not the most surefire place to do that. The Giants have the same record as the Cardinals as of Thursday, 78-81. And since 2017, the Giants have made the playoffs once (2021). Gray may not see San Francisco as an upgrade if he just looks at the record and recent playoff history.
But new Giants President of Baseball Operations Buster Posey could be the biggest reason why Gray would consider San Francisco.
Posey very clearly wants to win, and he has aggressively pursued winning now through his free agent acquisitions since he was hired. He signed Willy Adames and Justin Verlander this offseason and traded for Rafael Devers midseason, signaling a desire to compete for the playoffs immediately.
Inconsistency sunk the Giants in 2025, but they have a clear path forward: add starting pitching and bullpen help and they should be a contender.
The Cardinals, on the other hand, seem more keen on developing their young talent then making the playoffs immediately.
With a good sales pitch from Posey, Gray could view the Giants as a team headed in a positive direction.
