The Washington Commanders were able to secure a win against the Las Vegas Raiders during Week 3, even without star quarterback Jayden Daniels, who is nursing a knee injury.
Although Daniels is officially questionable for Sunday’s game on the road against the Atlanta Falcons, he seems to be trending in the right direction and wants to play, even though he admits it is out of his control.
“It’s up to the doctors, it’s not my decision,” Daniels said during a team press conference. “I feel good.”
However, there is some concern about star wide receiver Terry McLaurin, who seems more likely not to play due to a quad injury.
Jayden Daniels Trending Up, Terry McLaurin Trending Down
During an appearance on Good Morning Football on Thursday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network gave an update on the status of Daniels and McLaurin ahead of Sunday’s game in Atlanta.
“Let’s talk about Jayden Daniels, who has returned to practice this week on a limited basis,” Rapoport said. “That is a good sign. … We will see if Jayden Daniels is able to come back this week. He talked to reporters yesterday and said he ‘feels good’ but really it is ‘up to the doctors’ and that is the reality. He wants to play, he is pushing to play. It is not his decision about whether or not he is going to.”
It seems as though if it were up to Daniels he’d be on the field Sunday to take on the Falcons. McLaurin, however, appears to be trending in the wrong direction in terms of his playing status for Week 4.
“I would say a similarly murky status, probably more to the negative side, as it pretains to this week,” Rapoport said. “McLaurin did not practice yesterday, dealing with a quad injury. It’s an interesting one, described to me as a hip flexor injury. It doesn’t matter. It’s all the same thing. He’s still struggles to run. He may not be able to play this week.”
It’s great news for the Commanders that Daniels has a good chance of playing on Sunday if he’s on the practice field on Friday, but it seems like it might be a foregone conclusion that McLaurin will be ruled out.
Terry McLaurin Not on Commanders’ Practice Field
Along with Noah Brown and John Bates, McLaurin didn’t practice on Thursday, according to John Keim of ESPN, which isn’t a great sign with the showdown with the Falcons only being days away.
McLaurin is currently leading the Commanders in receiving yards this season, with 149 on 10 receptions. However, he has yet to make a trip to the end zone.
Deebo Samuel will likely become the primary target in the passing game on Sunday if McLaurin is unable to play. The former San Francisco 49ers star has gotten off to a good start with his new team, catching a team-high 16 passes for 132 yards and a receiving touchdown. He also has one rushing touchdown so far this season, as he hasn’t missed a beat since joining the squad.
