The New York Giants were expected to make several roster moves on the eve of the Week 4 matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers, and indeed they did, as Giants.com announced five transactions at 4 p.m. (ET) on September 27.
The headliner was that veteran kicker Graham Gano was officially placed on the injured reserve, meaning he’ll miss at least four games. The Giants did not sign a kicker to the active roster in his place; instead elevating Jude McAtamney from the practice squad for Week 4.
Big Blue also elevated veteran linebacker Neville Hewitt from the practice squad for the second straight week. Hewitt was only utilized on special teams in Week 3, logging 2 tackles.
With two open spots on the 53-man roster, the Giants also signed veteran defenders Tomon Fox and Elijah Garcia from the practice squad to the active roster.
Fox is a core special teamer and reserve outside linebacker who has been a member of the organization since 2022, suiting up for 31 total games, including the playoffs. Garcia is a rotational defensive lineman and special teamer who was picked up in 2024.
Jude McAtamney Wins Impromptu Giants Kicking Battle Over Younghoe Koo in Week 4
It seems that, at least for one week, the Giants will provide their long-time international prospect, McAtamney, with an opportunity to hold down the fort at kicker while Gano is sidelined.
Big Blue held a mini kicking competition this week, with Gano injured, bringing in 93-game NFL veteran Younghoe Koo to push the youngster. In the end, it appears McAtamney responded well, winning the Week 4 battle, but not necessarily the war.
If McAtamney struggles on Sunday, the Giants will surely turn things over to the more experienced kicker next week. But the job is his for now.
As for Koo, he’ll remain on the NYG practice squad for the moment. The veteran is coming off a rough season, where he only converted field goals at a 73.5% rate for the Atlanta Falcons.
That performance must have put him on a very short leash in 2025, as the Falcons released him after he missed just 1 out of his first 3 field goal attempts this year.
Giants Do Not Elevate or Sign a Running Back vs. the Chargers in a Curious Roster Move
The Giants made several roster moves on Saturday, but there was one obvious transaction that they elected not to make.
“One interesting aspect of the Giants’ moves: Only 2 healthy running backs in Cam Skattebo and Devin Singletary,” ESPN NYG beat reporter Jordan Raanan noted. Adding: “Turbo Miller remains on [the] practice squad and inactive.”
Raanan also reminded that “a positive” is that Tyrone Tracy was not placed on the injured reserve, like Gano, meaning the Giants are still hopeful he can return within the next few weeks.
Considering Singletary has also chipped in on kick returns, the Miller decision leaves the G-Men very thin in two separate areas. Running back, behind Skattebo and Singletary, and returner behind Gunner Olszewski.
Needless to say, this is an incredibly risky decision. The one silver lining is that fans can expect a lot of their rookie phenom, Skattebo, against the Chargers.
Skattebo earned a career-high 16 touches in Week 3, turning that into a career-high 121 scrimmage yards. The rookie’s number of touches should only increase over the next couple of weeks.
