Insider Explains Why Browns Won’t Trade Shedeur Sanders Despite Recent Comments

The Cleveland Browns won’t be trading Shedeur Sanders despite his recent comments.

Sanders recently came out and said he knows he’s a starting quarterback in the NFL. Meanwhile, his dad, Deion Sanders, also created waves by saying no one gets better by sitting on the bench.

However, despite those comments, Browns insider Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com says the team has no plans to trade the rookie quarterback.

“Sanders and his camp haven’t given any indication whatsoever that they’re unhappy with Sanders’ situation here as the third-team quarterback behind Joe Flacco and fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel,” Cabot wrote. “In fact, the communication has been positive…

“When the Browns hand the reins to Gabriel, Sanders may or may not be the backup depending on the timing, but he’s also likely to see some action this season,” Cabot added. “Browns owner Jimmy Haslam has said the club “absolutely” wants to see the two rookies play this season to help determine their strategy for the 2026 draft. The Browns have two first-round picks in the QB-rich draft… Regardless, the Browns have no plans to part with either of their rookie QBs, and they’re not going anywhere.”

Sanders is serving as the emergency third-string quarterback and is running the scout team. But, with calls for Joe Flacco to be benched, Sanders could get into game action soon.

Sanders Believes He’s a Starting QB

Although Sanders fell to the fifth round in the 2025 NFL Draft, the rookie quarterback felt like he’s a starting quarterback.

As Sanders has been inactive to begin the season, he spoke to ESPN Cleveland and made it clear he’s a starter.

“I don’t think playing or not playing is in my hands,” Sanders said. “Based on the situation, if things happen, if things pan out where I play, then I’ll be out there. And, I’ll be ready to play. I’m ready to play right now…

“I know if you see the quarterback play in the league right now, I know I’m capable of doing better than that,” Sanders added. “It’s obvious a lot of teams would be playing me, but that’s not in God’s plan right now. And some things happen for a reason and I’m a true believer in that. And whatever his plan for me is I believe in it. So I don’t be stressed or feel bad that I’m in the situation I’m in right now. It’s just funny to me and I just enjoy it.”

Sanders was taken 144th overall by the Browns.

Browns Coach Responds to Sanders’ Comments

Cleveland coach Kevin Stefanski was asked about Sanders’ comments and wouldn’t divulge too much into it.

The coach was happy with Sanders’ development and feels like he has taken strides.

“He’s doing a good job. I hope all of our guys feel like they’re ready and they’re working very hard at it,” Stefanski said. “We do a lot of work with our players, rookies, vets, all our guys, spending every available minute that we have with them. Getting them ready physically, mentally, whether it’s in the weight room, the meeting room, out on the field. So, all of our guys are working very hard.”

But, for the time being, Sanders remains the third-string quarterback, despite calls for Flacco to be benched.
