On Sunday September 28, 2025, the Athletics unveiled new gold “Sacramento” alternate jerseys ahead of the 2026 season.
And everyone collectively rolled their eyes.
The A’s, who are making a temporary stop in Sacramento until the end of the 2027 season at minimum before they plan to move to Las Vegas, have already failed to embrace the city of Sacramento.
Before their first season at Sutter Health Park in 2025, they had every opportunity to make their new Sacramento home fanbase feel appreciated. But they failed in every way. They chose to be known as just the “Athletics” rather than the Sacramento Athletics. They failed to sell any meaningful Sacramento merchandise.
Their only acknowledgement that they were partnering with (using) the city of Sacramento was a tower bridge patch on the sleeve of their jerseys. They of course also sported a Las Vegas patch on their jerseys as well.
The A’s could have designed a Sacramento themed jersey ahead of the 2025 season. That would have been a nice gesture at best and a good PR move at worst. Sacramento residents could have at least taken pride in seeing their city across the chest of big league players, and felt that the organization may take pride in them as well.
But the A’s aren’t a well run organization that makes smart choices, so instead, they are unveiling the jerseys ahead of 2026 as a desperate attempt to save face.
Sacramento fans aren’t fooled. They know how the A’s organization really feels about them.
When Will The Jerseys Be Worn?
For now, the A’s will wear the jerseys during every Saturday home game in 2025. 13/162 of the A’s games next season are Saturday home games. So Sacramento A’s fans can definitively expect to see these Sacramento jerseys in 8% of their games next season. Hooray! Town spirit!
Reportedly, players will also have the option to wear them other days at home or on the road. It will certainly be interesting to see if they expand the usage of the jerseys during the season.
During the first Sacramento Saturday of the season on April 4, 2026 against the Houston Astros, the A’s will be handing out replica Sacramento jerseys to all fans in attendance.
It will also be interesting to see how many fans make the trip for the new jerseys, and if those new jerseys are something that Sacramento fans want to wear.
Could This Be A Sign Of Trouble In Vegas?
Presumably, the A’s didn’t embrace their Sacramento home initially because they figured they didn’t need to.
They had big plans on the Las Vegas strip in just a few short years. So why would they need to show Northern California fans any love? They had already ripped the hearts out of Oakland fans anyway. Their hearts (wallets) were set on Vegas, they didn’t need to embrace this awkward temporary situation in SAC.
But now, they are backtracking and feel that winning over the hearts of Sacramento fans is suddenly important.
Could that be because they think they may need to stay…longer than initially thought?
Perhaps the stadium situation in Vegas is going slower than the A’s brass hoped and they will need to stay in Sacramento in 2028 and beyond. Or maybe, they’re afraid they will never get to Vegas at all.
Only time will tell if any of this is true, but it’s certainly a curious 180 degree turn to suddenly embrace the Sacramento fanbase.
Will you be buying a Sacramento jersey, Athletics fans?
