The Miami Dolphins had some tough questions to answer over the next few weeks, with many suggesting that the team couldâve moved on from star wide receiver Tyreek Hill.Â
When Hill is at his best, there’s a strong argument to be made that he’s one of the top five receivers in the NFL, at worst. Unfortunately, over the past year, he hasn’t exactly played the type of football the Dolphins have been expecting. Hill also dislocated his knee on the Dolphins’ Monday night win against the New York Jets. It was reported early Tuesday morning by Ian Rapoport of NFL.com that Hill tore multiple ligaments in his knee, which will end his season.
Had the Dolphins traded him, executives around the league didnât expect them to get too much in return. According to Jeff Howe of The Athletic, who spoke with multiple executives about his value around the league, it didnât sound like the Dolphins shouldâve expected to get much back.Â
âThe Athletic asked 13 team executives and coaches to assess Hillâs trade value. Six believed the Dolphins could recoup a third-round draft pick, with one executive debating whether they could stretch the compensation to a second-rounder. Before the 2024 trade deadline, wide receivers Davante Adams and Amari Cooper were moved for third-round picks.
âOn the other side of the spectrum, three executives thought Hill would only be worth a late-round pick swap because of teamsâ reservations over Hillâs off-field concerns. The rest leaned toward Hill being worth a fourth- or fifth-rounder,â he wrote.
Would the Chiefs Have Made Sense for Tyreek Hill?
There are a few teams that couldâve used the Miami Dolphins wide receiver, especially the Kansas City Chiefs.Â
Once the Chiefs looked dead in the dirt, they responded with an impressive win against an excellent Baltimore Ravens team on Sunday in Week 4. The Chiefs now have an opportunity to make another move and continue impressing offensively, which some expect to be the case. However, Hill is no longer a possibility for the Chiefs.
âThe obvious question: Will the Kansas City Chiefs enter the conversation?
âQuarterback Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs have looked out of sorts this season, and while they have been plenty successful since trading Hill to Miami in 2022, their offense has missed that consistent big-play threat. This season, the Chiefs have struggled to find a rhythm while Xavier Worthy missed time with a shoulder injury and Rashee Rice serves his six-game suspension. Even when theyâre both back on the field, the Chiefs have to recognize the offensive volatility that looms with another injury,â Howe wrote.
Did the Dolphins Make the Right Decision?
It’s tough to blame the Miami Dolphins too much for their decision not to move Hill, but they probably shouldâve done so during the offseason.Â
Hill came out last year after the final game of the season, stating that he was upset with how the franchise looked. Missing the postseason isn’t something that Hill wanted to face, but it was a reality for him last year.Â
According to the executives, last year was the best time for the Dolphins to move on from him, as his value was much higher than it currently is. At this point, that’s tough to argue against.
âTyreekâs value for a trade was last year,â said an executive, who was granted anonymity so he could speak freely about another teamâs player. âThe money, off-field accusations and instability would scare me off. He is talented, but that is a huge gamble for any type of valuable pick. You need to do a lot of homework before you make that decision.â
Regardless of whether the Dolphins missed on a few picks, hopefully, Hill will eventually get healthy.
